I'm rebuilding the front heater box for my 82 air cooled westy.
I have a question about the Fresh Air Ventilation flap. Should it have foam on both sides to completely seal its opening when it is closed? When I disassembled the box there was only foam on one side and the foam that was there was in good shape though I replaced it anyway. There is a small opening about 3/8" wide around the bottom of the flap when it is closed. You can see this in the second picture below.
Also, I'm using the Frost King 2" wide pipe insulation mentioned elsewhere. You can also see a roll of that in the pics.

I was able to answer my own question. The cover for this chamber of the heater box has a flange on it that provides the resting place for the Fresh Air Ventilation flap in the previous pictures. When assembled and examined with everything in place there is still a gap around the flaps. This can be seen here:
So, foam is required on both sides of the Fresh Air Ventilation flap. I'm sure this is a significant reason why my heater box was not directing air as the manual describes.
