hi, I'm looking for this style popes nose. the shorter, wider one if that makes sense. not the longer skinnier one. I was going to get a split nose, but changed my mind. this one more closely resembles the look that I'm after and my plans for later.
is this the same one?

it says its for a 58-63 bug. why do you see so many of these license lights on oval beetles then?
is that red light above the license plate in the pic I posted a modification? looks nice and is kind of the look I'm after. I want a red lens kind of like that? any ideas on what I can do?
here is the exact look I'm after for the license light, but obviously I can't source or afford the real deal like this.
I am going for the red lens look above the license plate.
to me this kdf popes nose more closely resembles the later style popes nose than the split style nose? no?
thank you! |

REALLY the term "pope's nose" in the old days, referred to the license plate light/ stop light on pre Sept. 1952 type one vehicles. Then, as time went by, new-comers also referred to the license plate lights on post Sept. 1952 (Zwitter) to (late oval) 1957s with W deck lid (incorrectly) as the Pope's nose. This W deck lid type had a V shape in the housing-base to fit into the V contour of the W. Then, the 1958 to early 1964 "nose" looks the same as the W deck lid version, but has no V. Instead, it has a flat bottom and a different bulb lens to fit the flat contour of the newer deck lid.
So, really, there is only one "Popes Nose", to 9/52 splits AND there are 2 "noses" thereafter to very early 1964...one has a V shape base and one a flat base. To the un trained eye, they appear to be the same, but in fact are not the same. Check 'em out. Hope that clears up matters for you. _________________ 5/50, pastel green 11G - SOLD

thanks, didn't realize that at all. I've seen so many ovals with that later 58-64 nose, and many 58-64 bugs with that V shaped nose. So I'm still a little confused, unless there's that many people that are modding their bug for a different year nose.
so, will that flat style, 58-64 nose fit an oval deck lid without modding it? or will only the v shaped one fit without altercation?
thanks for making me aware of the difference in shape at the base, Zen! didn't see that at all! appreciate all your help and thoughtful response. |

That is NOT what you are after. From a distance, 1953-57 compared to 1958-63 look the same, but are shaped different. The 1958-63 will NOT fit properly on a W deck lid. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

type1vwjapan, RareAir is really the VW master Guru, at least to me and I will confuse things a bit...
Here is my 1954 W deck lid with a 1958 to 64 nose on an adapter...allows one touse a later nose with flat design on a W deck lid. My guess is this adapter was put out to allow the flat base, '58 to '64 nose to go on a W deck lid as it is the base of the adapter that has the V shaped base. I have had this adapter for 40 years and wanted to finally use it and did on my'54...check it out.
RareAir,...couldn't resist
