|
|
The date was Sept. 14 2002. I was attending my first Jerome Jamboree in Jerome Az. and I stumbled upon this bus. I instantly fell in love and only had the ability to take a picture. Here he is...
Long story short, 4 years later Im working for a guy and I get invited over to hang out and lone and behold here sits Fubar (his previous name) Sitting among some of the coolest VWs Ive ever seen. Fubar has a Rancho built trans with RGB's and a 2275 motoring this beast down the road. After 11 years of asking my persistance paid off and Fubar gets a new home. My 2 girls and I have been camping in the Baywindow i bought in highschool for years, we do a lot of camping and this ol boy will provide us some much needed room and we will provide years of love and attention.
Here he is on his way home.
I have used many of you guys for help and advice. I search the forums for information that is worth its weight in gold so I hope everyone enjoys the build and I look forward to all the advice that will be needed through this process. I know not everyone will enjoy but thats what makes our community so great. |

I will watch this one.
I love the name Fubaru.
I am going to use that term elsewhere, like for any Split window bus with a Subaru engine. But not publicly, after a descrimination awareness lecture at work today, I now know that even though it is funny IMO, it might be hurtful to someone different than me. |

I know the previous owners and have had many shots of tequila in that former deluxe bus. Can't believe they sold it but it sounds like it's going to a good home. Treat her well. _________________ 59 DD panel. Former Romano's TV delivery bus

In the first post you said it had a 2275 and the last picture shows a Suby mod. Either way this a cool ride and should be a blast to camp in. Like mention above me... MORE PICS! _________________ Anthony

Did you do the Suby conversion or was it done already? People hate it, make fun of it, but it's the best of both worlds... power to push a bus, cooling to drive under all circumstances and did I already say power? I'm looking for more information on the mod. _________________ Anthony

The Original 2275 stayed with the PO, it was ready for some internal maintenance and I wanted to travel down a different road and throw some wild conversion in it.
So I found a JDM 2.0 Turbo with Links ECM
Getting unloaded and staged for pictures
Pulled the Rancho built trans and had Arizona Transaxle change 4th gear from .77 to .82 resealed while it was there and a couple little repairs.
3.44 ring and pinion
1st and 2nd are stock
3rd 1.19
4th .82
Super Diff
Alum. side plate
welded 3rd and 4th
hardened keys
custom cut 3rd gear
Rebuilt Small nut RGB's with Roller bearings (not ball)
Turning a 295/50r15
Ive done hours or research on the Hp, Tq, and boost curves, gear ratios, tire dia and drag coefficients similar to a brick wall. Gives me cruising in 4th and climbing ability in 3rd.
A little busy work for my helper
After the Trans was back in I started the fab work needed for the conversion. First order of business was the cross member. I used factory Subie mounts and build the cross member out of 14ga 2x3 steel.
With the subie weighing in at 40 Lbs more than an VW i wasn't worried about static weight but rather the twisting on the trans. Rubber isolation for vibration but held in with plenty of support.
Ill grab some pictures of the interior this evening. |

Airhead... you have a PM. Very cool bus and I'm sure that engine helps move it along just fine. _________________ Anthony

I remember seeing the bus at Jerome back in the day and thinking it was about the coolest bus I'd ever seen. |

Got some more pictures uploaded. Interior pics are on their way. I really wanted to clean out the parts before I start showing off the interior.
Radiator mocked up. It is supported all along the bottom and the top mount locks it in with 2 bolts. I wanted to be able to work on everything in the future just in case. Radiator is aluminum 2 row (19"x24" core)
Here is the outside looking in. There is a louvered door here now which will be replaced with a more functional opening.
A total of 3700 cfm ought to cool just fine. I welded in carriage bolts for fans and fan supports so everything is easy to work on. This is just mock-up so nylocks will be used of course. The Links ECM easily programs for on/off set points with my laptop
and of course sitting in the shop

next up came the plumbing. All boost and radiator plumbing is 304 Stainless Steel .065 wall polished in and out. I had to get used to walking the cup on a purged line. I quickly realized the dig was from working to slow. After some practice I got it down pretty good.
Here you can see the "dig" or "undercut"
After some practice.....
here is the inside... This was my first purge weld. I got better as time went on Everything was argon purged with a diffuser

Sorry guys if the pictures are to big.
Upper Boost tube
Lower radiator line
Upper radiator connection, I had to get creative on the hose. Spent a lot of time in the narrow isle at Autozone scouring through hoses.
Intercooler for.... well you know, Oil cooler sitting there will have a fan and thermostat. I think thats the VW in me always thinking about oil.
Plumbed
I never took pictures with all the support brackets welded to the tubes. These pics are mostly mock-up and progress. Its an intresting build and Im just taking my time having fun. Not really in a hurry to do anything just really enjoying the process. |
