My buddy is giving me his 1973 bus. He’s going to ship it to me in a few days. In the mean time I want to learn what I can. I took this video of the bus today. Other than it runs well, this is what I know... He told me he replaced the engine with a 90 degree German v6 water cooled engine. He said it has a 4.33 to one axle ratio and that if you floor it you'd blow the engine. Also he noted you’d get close to red line at 80 mph. He told me used a kit from Kennedy Engineered Products. My friend is pretty sick and I’m sure he could tell me much more, but he tires easily.
I’m thinking caring for this bus may be my new hobby. What do y’all make from what I’ve told you and what you see in the video?
Thanks! David

Congrats! I think you should pull out that engne and go back to the stock flat 4 and lower it! With that v6 in it it will be a pain to work on the engine due to lack of space. Hope your frend gets well soon. |

I probably should have emphasized my beginner level knowledge. I’m hoping for any comments to help me learn about this van.
a) With more detailed pictures could y’all tell me what kind of engine is installed?
b) What are the pros/cons of a non-stock engine or are there only cons?
c) When someone suggests lowering a van, is that purely for looks? What are the pros/cons of lowering/raising and is how is the community split as far as preference?
d) Do most folks trend toward getting their bus to stock condition or the opposite?
e) Does this bus look like a run of the mill 73 VW bus? Can you tell from the video? Does one call it a 73 vanegon or Westfalia or camper or is it just preference. Is a transporter when it doesn’t have camper features?
f) Is there a kit for adding water cooling to the front? What am I seeing on the front of this van?
Thanks in advance! David |

4.33 is not all that low geared. Some bugs/buses are 4.25 I believe. Drive it 65 mph & learn more about what you have before making any decisions. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts
