Hey there! I'm new here, I've had my Ghia for about a year and a half though.
I just got back from finishing college finals, and I was taking a long relaxing drive in the Ghia. First the radio died, and then a few seconds later the car shut off and I had to push it off to the side of the road. (I suspect it to be an alternator/generator problem, I dont know too much about aircooled engines)

I got it off the side of the road and wanted to open the engine compartment to see if I could figure out what was wrong and keep driving, but the little latch release knob behind the drivers seat was sitting out extended and not flush against the carpet. It was really stiff and would barely move and wasnt doing anything no matter how hard I pulled on it (I pushed it back into place and pulled it back out and that did nothing)

Is there anyway I can get the engine bay open without having to drill a hole from underneath to un-do the latch? I just now finished moving back home so now I have time to fix it.

Any suggestions?

First I'd find a friend to lift/pull lid while you push/pull the handle inside. Try to dislodge the latch. If that fails a 1/4 in hole under the latch so you can coathanger the cable may work. Really, they were designed to "fail open" ...a word to all of us owners, Check your latch function. Can you even access under the latch getting past the exhaust?

I dont have access to the latch, there's a hole right underneath where the pin is locked in place, but that doesnt do me any good.
