I'm looking at buying a 74 westy in fairly good condition. I don't know much about this model year and I am wondering what to look out for.

You should post in the Bay Window Bus Forum. This forum is for Vanagons from 1981 and EuroVans from 1993.
I believe '73-'74 campers had a unique interior set up. '74 was the first year of the fuel injected 1.8L engine. Unfortunately they didn't have hydraulic valve lifters yet and it is a bit of a pain adjusting the valves (every 3k miles) because the big heater boxes make it a tough to get the valve covers off and on. This is all based on my limited experience with a fellow club (LiMBO) member's '74 Westy.
He did have a lot of miles on that '74 and basically drove it till it rusted out from underneath him. You should check out the classified buses for sale here for some comparative shopping. |
