Just bought a 1965 arrow travel trailer. Weighs 1840 lbs, with a tongue weight of 248 lbs. Would a lowered bus with 1776 & bug tranny be able to pull this? I plan on adding trailer brakes. |

Not safely, and your motor and trans will take a beating. Too much weight to pull. |

in germany tongue weight is usually around 100 pounds or less. More could be a problem.
On the flat it might be okay to pull it, my brother used to tow a small eriba trailer, one size up from the puck.
this style tows well, because they are narrow, not taller than the bus, they have brakes, and most importantly they are light weight

I agree with you guys. Tongue weight around 60-80lbs would be better and no reduction gears is ,,,,, U want a show bus and be able to use it, not likely. U'd be lucky to get up a hill in 1st gear, maybe 2nd. With my '82 Toyota 5sp. PU I towed a 14 foot lido, very small light sail boat and a 8 foot sabot, another sail boat with a small boat trailer up the grape-vine and was a pain, usually in 3rd gear and 2nd, was ok on the flats.
Theres a gal that used to tow her 15-16 foot runabot boat with her VW van but stopped cause she didn't have the power to get up the hills, main reason think she said wasn't safe really, dont think she had trailer brakes. You can tow anything if you want. I towed a 25 foot cruiser with twin inboard merc's around the block once with my PU but was in low range 1st gear maybe 1 mile per hour _________________ I have Dial-Up an a hole in my pocket:)......Where are the 3 Stooges when we need them:)

If you look here at bottom of 1st page you can see a pu bus towing a bug and another bus, not likely going up or down a hill though...
I read some posts where they say 100lbs max on the tongue and no more than 1000lbs on the trailer?

No way i'd tow this boat with a vw van, weight is about 1200 with motor , dont know what the trailer weighs? 600#?
Admin note: non-vw pictures are deleted from the gallery _________________ I have Dial-Up an a hole in my pocket:)......Where are the 3 Stooges when we need them:)

I pulled a 16 footer with my 62 truck with (1600 dual) last year from Ohio to Oklahoma. Had too much tongue weight at first (910lb) so moved most of the junk To the back of the trailer. Couldn't get out of the driveway at first without the front end flying off the ground.
Wired 12 cinder blocks to the hurst bumper and got on my way.
Steering still pretty squirrelly but made it in just under 19 days.
You should be fine with the smaller trailer. |

I had to get a bigger engine to pull my Puck up a hill.

Cinder blocks, LOLOLOL Talk about unsafe at any speed
Scary part is if trailer is too heavy and ya don't see a dip in the road at night you could bend or break hitch or frame i'd think. _________________ I have Dial-Up an a hole in my pocket:)......Where are the 3 Stooges when we need them:)

I can just imagine seeing a row of cinder blocks in my rear view mirror!
Towing something which approaches the weight of the towing vehicle is dangerous; on a curve it can push the rear wheels of the front vehicle in a straight line and jack-knife you. Big rigs do it, but they have trailer brakes. |
