1971 Bay Westfalia with rebuilt dual-port 1600 and standard heater box cabin heat (not the gas heater). My cabin heating system puts out heat no matter what I do. Okay in the winter, but a sauna in the summer. As I search online all of the complaints are about heater systems that don't put out enough and how to make it produce more heat. Can't find anything on how to keep the heat out.

The heater cables are disconnected (deferred project to fix) so I set the flaps manually. I have crawled underneath, removed the accordion heater channels and visually verified that the flaps are in the closed position. I can switch from floor heat to defrost by kicking the lever switch on the riser tube as designed.

Short of disconnecting the accordion tubes and capping the heat channels I can't figure out what else to do. This is what the previous owner did. Have I missed something? Is this a good problem to have and I just need to drive around with the windows down and fresh air vents open in the summer?

Thanks!

CDR

So you mention your flapper boxes are closed, I would pull them to inspect as that is what stops the heat from coming threw the system. There is also a forward flapper that feeds under the westy bed on later models. This is the only item that would cause your current problem.

Your flapper valves aren't closing and/or sealing well. There is nothing else that could cause this. Crawl underneath with the engine running and see how much air is coming out of the heater boxes. Bet it is a lot.

If both heat exchanger flaps are closed. You should be getting no heat past them at all.
This is what you should be seeing when you pull the accordion.

Note the hat above the flap. When the valve is closed the heat is supposed to dump out of the hat. Make sure the po did not plug this.

Good luck

It is said that it is bad to run the heater flaps open in the summer because you are losing cooling air to the motor. One more reason to fix the problem.

For a temp fix- you can get expanding plugs for the fan shrouds and put the ducting back over them.- be easier than crawling under the bus.

I will venture a guess and say i bet the flaps are rusted away. Or the seals around them are toast. I have a late bay with different HE setup but the flapper box design is the same. I had constant heat as well and you should have seen how holey those were when i pulled them. Looked rusty from the outside but not rotted. They were worse on the inside.
