Is there any info out there about re-keying an ignition for an early bay? Found info on re-keying a late bay ignition but they are too different beasts.
Thanks!

Thanks Tcash but I'm referring to actually manually changing/arranging the wafers in the cylinder.
Like this but for early bays instead of late.

it would be easier, IMO to work the other direction.
rekey the doors to match the ignition.

I've looked through that thread. lists said link to late bay ignition and covers all sorts of doors and hatches but not early bay ignition.

Here's how it's done.

File down the two bronze pins. they've been mushroomed to keep the ignition/cylinder together. May also need to pry a bit with a screwdriver.

Removed.

Remove these shims. They keep the wafers from popping out. It's also been peened in. I filled the inner edges of the groove then tapped the under side of each wafer with a small flat head and hammer. Then pushed them backwards with the same flat head.

Once the shims have been removed you can change the wafers.

Reinstall reverse of diss-assembly. Pound the end back on put a dab of JB weld over each bronze pin.

Now my MK2 Golf and T2 Bus share the same key.

Estacaco, what year is your bus? I don't remember an early (68-70) L-code ignition tumbler working like that. Did you change key profiles? I'm really confused how you got that done in an hour, because now isn't your whole bus multiple keys anyway?

My bus is a 69. I lost the key, I will be rekeying the other locks to match. I did not change key profiles. It appears that they used the same key wafers in 85-92 golf's and jetta's.
