Well here I go.
Just bought a 1974 VW 412 coupe with a manual transm and even AC
Has a cracked windshield, but already was anle to pick one up locally.

Looking to upgrade the wheels but would nee some advice
Currently have 4x130 15" with 165 tires on but they look like bycicle tires on that car
Which way do you think I should go? Should I buy 4 or 5 lug adapters and what bolt pattern will I have the most options on a new wheel set?

You can go with virtually any wheel set up for VW type 3 or porsche 914. Buy a 5.5" wheel. I run 205-60-15....and it handles 100% better due to lower sidewall profile and better treadwidth, looks good and changes the speedo by less than 1 mph. Ray

Mine has widened super beetle rims (1", I think) and it's running on 185/x - 15.

Feels OK and steering isn't too stiff.

155 looks almost funny under this car, it's not a Beetle.

You can run up to 185's on 4.5" wide wheels, but no wider IMO.

Been running them for about three decades....with HARD driving. It causes no issues whatsoever......and it depends on the tire design and sidewall profile.

You can safely run 205-60, 205-55 and 205-50 profile tires on 5.5" wheel with a J type rim. When you get up to a 65, 75 and 80 sidewall profile.....you have far to much bead roll because of the high sidewall to safely run under a 6.0" rim width.

Same guidlines the tire companies recommend and companies like the tire rack will tell you the same and they have great experience with tires.

It matters the sidewall profile.....not the treadwidth. Its thechigh sidewalls that are dangerous.

The 205-60....is within a few millimeters of total circumference as the original tires of a vw 412.....which in radials....were 185-75-15......not the 155s of the 411 in bias ply and not the 165 that hardly any of them reached the continent with as many erroneously report.

Many people run high offset Porsche wheels with adapters as the positive offset can still be high enough even with the adapter thickness.

Yes......as much as it adds one more layer of complexity. .....I am thinking about other wheels lately.

My car at the moment still has the late 90s Mangles, chrome, 5.5" wide stock replacement wheels.

At this point in time they will have been sitting still for too long and have "spread" spots.....and they are getting rust spots. They were excellnt rins...even though, they were always a little soft for steel. While I drive on them I basically, went through almost two sets over about 4-5 years. They were easily bent about the hub....too much flex.

But.......they had perfect offset and backspacing for a 411/412, fit the stock hubcap just fine were about $50 each.....and looked nearly stick except for the chrome...which I hated but its all you could get.

I would just get another set and be done with it....especially now that you can buy them painted......but they are made by totally different company and in China.....and I have heard nothing good about the quality.

So I have been looking at and thinking about some different rims.......partly because im picky about my tires....and its hard to get a good selection in 15" anymore.

Also...I just recently found on a Porsche site....an affordable, painted steel 356 replica rim.....that is interesting. I will post a link later. Ray
