I just don't understand it-I'm working on my '66 T1-the PO attached the emergency brake lever to the cable using a wire tie (commonly known in the telecommunications world as a tyrap). I needed to replace my rear drums because I bought the car with one wheel lug broken off on the right side. I used the torque meister tool to remove the axle nut (came off with only a little effort) and thought I'd have to use a wheel puller to remove the drum (bought a nice used one on eBay) but the drum came right off-only to find the tyrap connected emergency brake (explains why I had difficulty adjusting the emergency brake on the right side)-in addition, the leaf spring was missing (shouldn't be surprised-they were missing from the front backing plates also). I think this shows the difference between early owners who just want the car to take them where they want to go and as cheaply as possible and "Samba" people to generally want to restore their cars to at least a safe condition. The more I delve into this car, the more I find-works out well-I'm retired and have the time and the desire to learn. Lucky me! _________________ '62 T1 rag top.

Gary - funny and sad about the parking brake hookup, we've never "seen it all" !!!
By the way: the stronger spring should be on the side with the wheel cylinder (the top) and not the adjuster (bottom). _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Maybe the PO should have applied some spit to the tie, first. That usually helps.
At least he didn't use a rubber band .

Oh My. The infamous tyrap. Correct term too. Poor usage of the tyrap. Like cusser said flip flop the springs. You want to get rid of the rust soak them in cider vinegar over night, rinse in water and use a soft wire wheel. The over night vinegar works great on nuts bolts washers. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I'm replacing everything on the rear brakes except the push bar and the emergency brake lever. I'll have the try the tip about the vinegar on the bolts. The leaf spring was missing on the backplates but as I don't have a welder (it's on the list which is growing longer every week...so far my wife hasn't said anything), I bought a used set on eBay which I will clean up and paint. I knew about the springs (I review the "BugMe videos and Muir's book prior to working on anything). This car is just full of screw-ups, short cuts and plain old laziness but that's what makes it interesting. I just love these cars. _________________ '62 T1 rag top.

Yep, soaking in vinegar (any type, they're all about 5% acetic acid, why it works, I'm a chemist) or dilute phosphoric acid works real well to remove rust. Be a little patient.
Also, those work real well to remove hard water deposits too. I remember a decade ago my shower one-handle faucet was leaking, and I couldn't remove it to fix; the plumber at work said I'd likely need to cut into the rear wall in the closet to fix this. Well, I put vinegar in a sandwich bag and and used duct tape to soak the fitting on the wall in the vinegar, believe I used a piece of wood to support the weight of the bag, and a few hours later was able to unscrew it and fix it, leaving the closet wall intact !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
