Hi Guys

I have a 1600SP VW engine that I am rebuilding,I currently have a 31 Pict 3 but its time is just about up.My engine is purely stock and will remain that way. However I am looking for better performance and better mileage than my current carb setup. In light of this,I finally decided to switch to the dual carb setup.

There are two setups which interest me from CB Performance:

They are Dual Weber 34mm ICT Kit - Single Port Type-1 & 2 to '71 and Solex Carbs - Dual 34mm with Electric Chokes (single port).

http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3284

and

http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=6427

Please advise me which between the two is ideal for me with the following in mind:

Easier Installation and maintenance(have to import most parts to my country)
Better mileage,
More Horsepower
Better cold starts
Durability
Build quality
Price vs Performance

If you had to pick one for me which would would it be and why?I thank you in advance for your support.

That is a 30-PIC carb in the image.

Agreed a 30-PICT-1 would be better if used in a post-1960 VW.

This sentence along with pictures of dual webers is confusing us. Dual webers is hardly stock.

What is your #1 priority?

Mileage, Cold Start, or Maintenance (syncing of carbs/adjustment)

Mileage and Maintenance I would go with the Weber kit. I prefer that linkage setup

Cold start is easy - Solex setup

My number one set is Mileage,Maintenance and performance.I don't live in sub zero temp,it gets to about 13-16 degrees centigrade at the lowest, thus not sure if cold starts will be a problem.

With my previous carb, couldn't get it to start when cold without the choke(probably worn out carb)

If you get below about 20 C, you can have icing problems due to moisture in the air. Especially if you get fog or even just dew on the ground.

With dual carbs, you are going to have more maintenance.

With more performance you are more likely to have less MPG, unless you can restrain yourself.

All carbs need a choke for trouble free start up with cooler mornings.

If the throttle shaft bore in the carb is worn so the shaft is loose, then the carb is worn, but that can be bushed back to proper fit.

x3 on kads.

a couple of things though, i'd recommend using heavy duty vavle springs on any dual carb set up. I'd also recomend a standard 1 3/8th in. header and queit pack muffler or hide-away muffler (or similar type of stock sized header muffler combo). I'd also use CSP linkage. if you are not willing to at least upgrade your exhaust then forget the dual carb idea all together.

also, i dont understand the "dual carbs require more maintenance" comments made earlier in this thread. good carbs with GOOD linkage are set it and forget it items. once its tuned it should stay that way unless you have to remove the linkage or carbs for any reason. the carbs themselves will have to be serviced about as often as stock - meaning if they are clean and good and tight, and no air leaks they virtually never have to be serviced beyond periodically checking air mixture once or twice a year- just like stock.

I use a 30-PICT-1 in my stock 1600 SP - runs great. As a back-up I have a near-new 30-PIC just like the one in the photo (mislabeled 30-PICT-1). But it does run like crap - barely idles... I've read recently that it's for 36 or 40 hp engines and I read here that it's not so good for post-1960. But since I have it... what if anything can be done to modify it for better results??

Clean the carb out and jet it for your size of engine. The 30-PIC is more for 1300 and later engines. The reason it is so great for pre-1961 VWs is it has the manual choke which those early VWs had as a standard item.

A 28 PIC or PICT would be better for 36 or 40 HP engine, and a lot easier to find.
