Here she is california Van nuys 66 bug not sure of motor size {slow}
but runs good shifts good tight steering brakes could be upgraded for So Cal driving. No rust or holes in pan third ugly paint job on body a few dents and dings and a second color on inside trying to put together a list of what I want to end up with a clean stocker, or mild modified. Ive done other car restorations but never a bug and have only driven in a stock bug. So even things like lowering which looks great does it still ride good whats the best way to go about lowering? Do big motors over heat whats a good middle road reliability and performance? I have paint and interior covered. But please let me know on some of the other do's and donts Thanks. |

LOTS of lowering info in the stickies at the top of this forum page.
Big motors cost big dollars . A 1600 with dual carbs can do 70 in traffic .
Most of your questions can be answered here ; Learn how to search to see if that question has been asked and answered before .
Buy a bently manual and have a wiring diagram enlarged and laminated
If you need specific info there is 66VWBeetle.com

X2 on that. You will quickly learn that any modification from stock, especially the front suspension, has you chasing other issues like caster, Ackerman angles, turning angle, etc. The same rule applies when installing higher HP motors. Now the stock tranny is stressed out, the stock clutch is too weak, the stock drum brakes don't slow you down fast enough because you are driving faster, etc. In a nutshell, go for the larger motor and other mods if that floats your boat, but realize that you will have your 16-digit credit card memorized from using it so much!
Looks like you have a nice solid CA car, so hats off to you. Members who live in the rust belt areas can only dream about finding such a rust free example. Please share your buying story and post some more pics, we love photos:) _________________ 1957 VW Oval Resto Mod |

Being the car looks to be very solid but a little past stock, to fully restore a '66 means you might spend $15 to $20K in attempt to make it as "all original" as can possibly be done and it would still not be as accurate or nice as an original low mileage survivor '66 that you can still find for the same or less money.
I say at this point if you're going to spend any money on, without a full commitment to stock right now you might as well build it to your liking from the start. This way you get to choose the best features to suit your desires. The fun comes from driving, and being from my old home town of Whittier, you can do that 360+ days of the year in a Beetle
For the local vibe be sure stop in some time to see Ralph, Tom, The Cat and the locals at the VW Gold Mine in Uptown on Pickering and tell them I said Hi
For sure check out the Community section for upcoming shows and events like Pomona Swap Meet, VW Drag Day, The Classic, Bug-In etc. There you get to see cars set up the way you want, ask the owners for direct feedback, and most importantly to share your car with other like minded enthusiasts.
Nothing like seeing the stuff you want on the swap meet table in front of you either, being able to touch/feel/smell and bargain for it, all while paying no PayPal or shipping fees!!!

Thanks Im not going all OG I'm just making a clean driver
With a real clean paint job and a great interior done by me.
I like working on cars, bikes, and motorcycles this will be my second
build. The first was a 77 chevy stepside that came out great. I hope the same result for my bug |

Which ever floats your boat. It's a matter of personal preference. Try each set and decide what you like best.
For years I ran the red/amber ones. Now I'm running weathered red US spec tail light lenses on my 67.
Good Luck.
