I have two 19" flexible led lightstrips - I plan to attach them to a 20" long L shaped piece of plastic molding and install the molding into the engine lid so that they can be seen through the vents as a 3rd tail and brake light.

I've seen photos of nice examples, but I can't quite figure out how people have attached the assembly up into the early style integral rain tray. Anyone here with experience and/or ideas?

I mounted my high stop light against the firewall and not in the engine lid, like this:

I got the idea from Nicholas, also known as Sputnick.

Try looking for a post about this article by C21Darrel. He did the type of installation that you're asking about and showed me in person at Prado a few months ago. Thought that I had bookmarked it...

Best,

Thom

I used the same flexible LED strips with adhesive backing, but I mounted them to a strip of aluminum bar stock and used two beam clamps to fix the bar between the hinge mounting points. I added the tie wraps as a safety measure in case the adhesive breaks down from the heat - I don't know what the fan would do with those LED strips if they came loose!

Here's a 6 page thread on the subject:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=301587

New questions should be asked there for continuity and future reference.

Thanks - I looked through the 6 page thread and only saw DanUK mount them somehow in an early deck lid with the integral metal rain tray. I couldn't tell from the photos how he did it, though. Everyone else seems to have a later deck lid with available mounting holes from the plastic rain tray.

I was worried that a firewall mounting location wouldn't get enough light out during the day, but I think I'll give it a try and wire both strips as a brake light.

I bought my third brake light from "The Lereyn company" for my 1962 Porsche 356B coupe. It mounts via a clip to the top of the back window, comes either 6v or 12v, and easy to wire up.

I used just one 19 inch strip for my third light. About $12 bucks from Superbrights. I have the early (no rain tray) decklid. Since my car was freshly painted I just had to wipe down the front edge of the vent. Feed the strip in and start removing the backing. Worked my way across pulling the backing off and pressing the strip down. The elec hook up is directly off the brake light. I used a double spade connector and ran the wire back up the loom and exited in the center of the deck lid. Ground to one of the lid mount bolts. 3 years and the adhesive has held up perfectly.
Wire in center.

Thank you Darrell! I now understand how you just stuck the adhesive strip directly to the the front edge of the metal rain tray. I'm guessing I have to remove 45 years of dirt, oil, and oxidation before I give it a try but it looks good. I may put one strip on the fire wall as third tail light and the other in the tray as a brake light.

Not to offend or to start an argument, but the point is to ask your questions in that same thread so that, for future reference, we don't have sixty odd threads to look through for information. One thread, one single point of reference. It's so much easier to look things up that way. There are those here who will basically pound this into your brain, but I think a kinder approach works better. So again, no offense, just trying to be helpful.. I'm kind of surprised that the Mods didn't catch this. They usually do. Peace!

Well yes I do usually redirect if the subject has been well covered in a previous thread but in this case by the time I saw it at breakfast time there were already a couple of informative replies that would have quite possibly have drawn the topic to an early conclusion. The advice is as always search first...if you find a topic that has info relevant and is reasonably up to date add your questions to the existing topic...if the question hasn't been asked before it will add value to the existing topic.
