Firstly I would like to say hi, although this isn't my first time on the samba it is my first time here on the Eurovan forum ( we previously had an 87 vanagon ) . Now we are the proud owners of The Tortuga ,a 99 ,non camper ,bog standard ,kid hauling, Eurovan . And as all vanlife peeps know you can't just leave it bog standard ! You gotta tinka with it! So I was wondering if any of you out there had added a second battery , completely independent to the starter battery, to power a fridge or other device .
My plan is to have a solar panel wired directly to the battery and a 12v outlet so to power an Engle fridge and rely totally on solar to charge the battery, I realize that on days with little or no sun there may be no fridge ( so we drink all the beer so it doesn't get warm!) I inquired at go westy you about an aux battery hook up kit but it doesn't exist for a Eurovan ,or does it ? Does someone out there know something I don't ? Or they don't!?
Anyway more of a hello than anything and as my wife needs a fridge in the van I figured I throw all that in too!

How often are you going to use this to camp and fridge?

You can keep this really simple and just put a battery in with a 120 VAC charger/maintainer and just charge it once a month at the house and before a weekend trip. I have the aux battery on my 2002 EV and can look up the circuit for ya when I get back from Africa...lol

Before you get too deep into solar power recharge, look up the typical draw on your battery, calculate the watt hours needed, then appreciate you will need a solar setup 4x larger than that to keep up. You will quickly be up to 1000 USD or more.

So it really is simple! I guess I just don't get why it took so long for me to figure this out? (I should drink more beer I guess!?!!).
