Please do send that to me and I will make a CAD model of it and STL over the holidays. It might be cool.
Maybe a 481 is also in order...
Could you make one like that also Captain? |
PM sent.

Photopolymers certainly give a better finish, especially at 25 microns a layer.
Here is rev 2 of the project using our new Statasys PolyJet “Objet30 Pro”.
http://www.stratasys.com/3d-printers/design-series/objet30-pro
Not 3D printed, really it is called Additive Manufacturing.
Here are some pictures of the processes.
Maybe I will have some extras for my friends at Kelley Park this year.
This took 3 hours to print.
Photopolymer print on the right & ABS on the left.

For those of you that download the stl file to print; here is a picture of some of the inserts I used.
Originally I found these at Olander and used something like this below on the first set.
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/inserts/0278556/
Being I made the chamfer so big, for ease of insert, it can also accommodate a similar type with a small lip on the top edge also. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

Hey Solomon,
very nice work there with the 3d printer, those emblems look very nice.
made me think of what I'd like printed then made for real...
a crankshaft hand crank pulley nut.
I've always wanted one of these for hand starts just for the fun of it.
not been able to locate one or really wanted to pay a buncha cash for it.
plus I know a machine shop I bet could copy it if they had an example...
anyways keep on doing your thing!
who knows what else you guys will dream up to make!

Brilliant work.
I've done a couple of 3D printed parts myself. They had the same heavy texturing that your part has. I wonder if there is a variation of printer that can print without leaving the texture, or at least with a fine enough texture that it would be practical to sand the part smooth.
And once that smooth part exists, I'd investigate having a chrome finish applied with spray metalizing. (!)
If you're interested in another project, I'd be happy to provide a vector version of this:

I've heard that parts created on printers that rely on UV curing are susceptible to UV breakdown as well. I will be curious to see how your emblem preforms over time when exposed to sunlight. Although if you painted it perhaps that is no longer a concern? |

If anyone wants the stl file for this 481 to print, just pm me.
I will also make a 181 soon; but at $7-8 a cubic inch I can’t just blow them out the door. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

This VW 481 was not a font per say. It was a machup using pictures of the original VW emblems that were then traced creating splines then cleaned up in a CAD system. I compared several versions of many emblems over many model years to get the best resembles. Captain Spalding was the originator of this concept; I just updated it a little.
Hope to have a VW 181 made in the near future. _________________ "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."

So before I take off to Bugorama in Sacramento this weekend I wanted to share this. Hopefully I can get better pictures soon. I used a 2 process metallic paint called Spaz Stix chrome spray. Looks ok…
