It's hard to tell from a video... But...
You disconnected the battery FIRST, right?
I like to snug the starter bolt, then snug the 17mm engine D-bolt, then tighten them down alternating. Yes it sucks. Yes it also mates the starter perfectly perpendicular to the bellhousing so you get cleaner engagement and better bushing life for the bendix support. I also clean clean clean the starter and bellhousing mating surfaces for the best electrical flow. I consider this as important as having clean grounds and clean positive contacts on the starter. Speaking of, I can't really tell in your video, but it looks like you have some fraying wires in your crimps to the main + post on the starter. Not allowed! That is unfused full battery/alternator current. I also clean those and stack them most important to least important, so the battery cable goes on first, then is followed by smaller and less amp-drawing connections.
I'm sure there are more, but that's what I have at the moment...

The factory manual says to "apply VW sealing compound D3 between starter end plate and transmission case." Does anyone know if that sealing compound is still available, and if not, what are you using as a suitable alternative? Also, wouldn't a sealing compound interfere with the electrical flow you mention? _________________ 1970 Crew Cab |

don't overthink it. you'll be fine without it. it was a goopy crapy smootz to seal joints and went onto the recess in the bell housing to seal it up.

Thanks for the correction. I used to be a nice guy, then I ruined it by exposing myself to the public. |

A smear of grease will seal it up from moisture and prevent corrosion, much easier to remove later as well _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
