Here is how to replace the cv boot on your bus watch and learn
video by erb smith copyright 2015

Link

In order to get the clip off the end of the axle i use 2 screwdrivers one with a fine tio and one with an extra wide tip.
The wide one i push the clip out with while the fine one i used to hold the clip in place and out. you'll see when you try it..
Do you have any suggestions how to do this better or faster

thanks erb

I really enjoy your videos, but PLEASE get rid of that dumb music. If I want to hear music I will go on Pandora. I can't hear a damn thing. Sorry!

Also get better lights and edit it. I have learned quite a lot, but have to keep watching over and over and rewind then forward the video.

Other then that thanks for taking your time to help us that are still learning!!!

I'd probably learn a lot but please TURN THE DAMN MUSIC DOWN!
Suggestion - watch your videos (or better yet have someone else watch your videos) prior to posting them. Issues like "the music is so loud no one can hear your narrative" should be easy to identify and address.
Thanks for your efforts.

Yes please, they'll also prove extremely useful when you make the engine rebuild video and want to get the gear off the crank Wink

There are several special tools that will make the job easier.

Snap ring pliers
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=circ...fc6yi_b_p2
Make your choice as to the snap ring pliers.

Snap ring pliers with toothed or dimpled ends are the best for CV Joint snap rings
http://www.amazon.com/Stanley-J250G-9-Inch-Horsesh...lip+pliers
Snap rings are easy to get off, but harder to install. The spring makes this an easier tool to work with.

3/8 drive 6mm hex socket
http://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-1376-Drive-Socket-Cr-...F8+6mm+hex

Long 6mm hex socket makes working around the rubber boot easier.
http://www.amazon.com/XtremepowerUS-Metric-Pro-Gra...socket+set
The set is cheaper than a single from Sears

Here's both.
http://www.amazon.com/SK-Hand-41405-Socket-8-Inch/...F8+6mm+hex

Some CV bolts are triple square.

Thanks for that Erb! I commend you for keeping your cool with the new boot install on the shaft. I might have been inclined to sling a couple of profanities in that segment Laughing

I could be wrong about the size. I changed my post so it refers to sets rather than individual sockets. The sets have both 6mm and 8mm. You can't go wrong.

Cut any stubborn 6mm axle bolt head, on trany side it's easy, a grinder and cutting wheel will do the job, on the wheel side use a high speed air tool with a small cutting wheel.

Remove drive shaft. Ok, to remove the remaining drive axle bolt i mig weld a 13mm nut.

The replacement of drive axle bolt should be part of normal maintenance. It is crucial to deeply clean the bolt head before attempting to remove those, a partially inserted 6mm Allen socket will never be enough.

The TORKS 12 point bolt are way better than the ALLEN one.

They are a pain anyway

If you do not have a welder you can, put double nuts on the bolt. Tighten them against each other. Put a wrench on the inboard nut and unscrew it.

If is broke off flush with the flange. You can try a left hand drill with a reversing drill motor. Good luck these bolts are hard.

Still no go. Weld a nut from the inside circumference to the broken piece and use a wrench to extract it.

Good Luck

I have not watched the video, but if you didn't mention it you should talk about whether to keep the bevelled washer if it is still there or not. Maybe show a copy of the VW service bulletin about discarding the washer.
