Wow. Where to start with the things he has done wrong?
- Used a ratchet instead of a breaker bar. The cheater pipe was good, though.
- Got is math all bolluxed up on the torque calculation demonstration.
- Jacked it up with a block putting pressure on the outside of the jack point, risking crushing the jack point.
- Spray painted after a little wire brushing -- no rust treatment, bad spraying technique, and no drying time.
Also, those "stuck" studs came out easy! I've had some on way worse than that, and this technique wouldn't have budged those. Advanced techniques: penetrating oil soak, application of heat, hammering while under torque load, and when all else fails, cutting the damned things off and using a new stud (on the later buses, at least). _________________ John

i really hope that nobody is actually following any of these "instructional" videos made by mr. 'vwuguy'.
they are full of poor techniques, questionable practices and just plain backyard hackery.
they should be removed from thesamba as they are detrimental to the community as a whole.
on the other hand....
it's people like this--and people who take advise from people like this--that keep my belly full.
so keep it up, vwuguy.
it's slow season at the shop _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 93 Multivan 5cyl 5M/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

vwguy has good intentions, but some of his recommendations and procedures are poor and possibly damaging and/or dangerous. If his videos could be edited by a more knowledgable and experienced person they would be a contribution to TheSamba. As the videos are now they could lead a newbie into trouble. I agree that they should be removed, but thanks for the effort.

Always, always, always keep the tip of the spray nozzle as close to your work as humanly possible. Outstanding. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

actually those bolts were stuck on there I could not get them off with the air gun for life of it . used several different torque guns and tried to get those off with no luck.. this was the only way to get them off and that was the first time I took them off.

- Spray painted after a little wire brushing -- no rust treatment, bad spraying technique, and no drying time. -it was antirust paint and any paint is better than no paint.. it did dry once the wheel was on..it was 1/4 steel on painted on not really requiring paint or so I was told..
-I could not find the breaker bar or I would have used it.. If you willing to get me a breaker bar that be appreciated.

I'm sorry. People (including me) are being pretty hard on you. I know your heart's in the right place, and I commend the effort it takes to get stuff up there.
Don't let us get to you. Keep on bussin'! _________________ John

I think you are going to be embarrassed when in five years you look at these videos you are making. Lots of bad technique and a whole lot of filler that should have been edit out before you ever posted them even on a draft basis.
I have owned a cheapy 3/4" drve socket set for close to thirty five years at this point which works great for braking loose stubborn wheel lugs. This set has saved me a countless amount of effort, cursing, and bloody knuckles over the years. It and a three to three and a half foot long piece of 1" Sch-40 steel pipe will get most any part of one of these rigs loose with minimal chance that anyone if going to get hurt.
Check out this video, Ben is removing a head for a WBXer engine, something that sometimes takes people hours to do. The video shows the whole process from beginning to end and is only 2 minutes and 44 seconds long.

I can't say anything wrong about anything he shows in the video at all, what it shows is that he is a pro that has figured out how to make hard jobs easy. He is not using special tools, taking risks, or destroying expensive parts and pretty much anyone who watches is going to learn something of value. |
