I am building an Manx clone and trying to use a dune buggy steering set up (basic steering wheel and straight shaft). What is the best way to make a "steering column" to support and guide the shaft to the steering box?
I have been playing around with a few ideas but nothing seems solid. |

Generally you will need at least a brace (tube?) that spans tub at dashboard to support a shaft bearing (Do not try to support bearing with dash) .... And probably a mechanical "U" joint on steering box/shaft to eliminate any flex that might be there with rag joint to give rigidity of shaft....
Using a tube and supporting it at firewall and below dash moves bearing up to behind steering wheel (cantilever) to better support shaft than just a bearing at dash board level...

Meyers manx has sold their steering column support frame separately for a while now. In addition to supporting the upper end of the 58-67 column, it ties the hood/dash, windshield frame and body together into a more rigid structure. The botton end of the steering column tube should be supported by the body, ideally where it passes through the VW rubber grommet.
The picture on their webpage shows it upside down. It should fit clones if they're the same size as a Manx. Its also something a person could be fabricate if they believed the MM one might not fit.

This picture shows one of the older style Meyers Manx dash frames being fitted. The newer ones don't use the middle vertical bars or the top cross bar and have a slotted bracket to provide adjustment to mount the steering column

Berrien also makes a kit. I've never used it, but have heard that it works quite well. |
I've used the Berrien kit and it's useful in that it'll work for different body widths etc. but it's not as secure as the Manx style ones. The column will flex more and it doesn't tie the screen mounts into the framework. |
