Well the age old problem of getting all the gauge lights to operate after converting to 12 volt can be quite the mystery! A lesson learned. Read the forums and be patient with your wiring diagram. Here is how I solved my flasher dash light with a pretty simple method. I used a trigger relay and wired it for a negative output. Obtained on Amazon for very little money.

With this relay I was able to get the dash flasher bulb to flash with the main turn signal lights. The relay is triggered by the flasher and the negative connection is made.-SIMPLE! When doing all this I also up graded to LED bulbs on the dash lights. Note: The oil/gen/signal bulbs all need to be reverse polarity available from http://auto-hub.com/ It you try to buy the cheap bulbs you can only use them on the gauge back lights and high beam gauge light. |

Using a single incandescent bulb is simple. Adding additional components and wiring connections is more COMPLICATED.
If an LED is used for the warning light, an alternator charging system will no longer function.
What possible benefit do you think you are getting from using LEDs anyway ?
And why do you consider them an "upgrade" ? |

Be warned that if you have an alternator and you put an LED bulb where the incandescent bulb is for the idiot light, you will likely have charging issues unless you put a dummy load in line. Most alternators need the light working correctly. The alternator charging circuit runs through the idiot light and needs to see it.
While a smaller wattage bulb or might draw enough current to excite the alternator, the impedance of the bulb is what controls the charging circuit. If the bulb draws too little current, the charging system will not operate properly. Use a 2W (12V) bulb, and your charging system should work correctly. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

Yes the bulb must be recognized and this is done by adding the alternator exciter which comes with the alternator led bulb from the guys at http://www.auto-hub.com Thanks for posting that as I did leave that off and should of mentioned it-my apologizes! |

The "alternator exiter" is nothing more than a resistor placed in parallel with the LED. This load will allow the alternator to function again.
The original incandescent bulb can light with polarity in either direction . This means that it can warn you of two problems : failure to charge, and overcharging.
Since an LED will only light with polarity in one direction, it will not light to warn you should an overcharging problem ever occur.
So for $42.00 (7 LEDs @ $6.00 ea.) your car will now do everything that it could have done before with $14.00 worth of incandescent bulbs (except warn you of overcharging).
Why do you consider this to be an upgrade ? What has been improved ? |
