Hello,
I am rebuilding a 1983 Vanagon 2.0 air cooled engine that was the victim of an engine fire. I had the heads rebuilt and have replaced most of the unidentifiable blobs with new parts. I need some help with the last few pieces of the puzzle. Please refer to the photo. The photo is from Google images, and I have been using it as a model. Bentley has some diagrams, but not this detailed. I'm not sure if this photo is a 1983, but it looks like it.
1) This vacuum hose from the auxiliary air intake valve kinks against the sheet metal by cylinder #2. Is there supposed to be some kind of ELL here, or do I have something in the wrong place that is creating a kink.
2) What is this black thing? It seems to be positioned like a PCV valve, but I can't find a name for it to search for the part.
3) What is this hose called and who carries it? It connects to #2, which I don't know the name of…
4) Just a note, I have an auto tranny, so I don't have this deceleration valve.
5) Does the distributor vacuum line go to the vacuum fitting right by the throttle plate, or to the other fitting on the air distribution box?
Thanks in advance. Don't feel the need to answer everything. Help with any piece of the puzzle is greatly appreciated! _________________ 1983 Westy (air cooled)

1.
Yes, there is a small rubber L piece which connects between the AAR and the house to it.
2.
That is the crankcase breather. Afaik they are not available new
3.
Any hose which is oil safe and fits both ends should work.
5.
The distributor should be connected to the nipple on the throttle assembly. _________________ 1970 Squareback with 1915cc dual 40idf

Can I start by saying :
As you probably already know, your engine code is CV (2.0 litre, AC , FI).
You already notice that you dont have the decel valve due to your automatic transmission, ( I learn something, thks). The photo you show is for a federal version of the stuff that comes around that engine (white box on the firewall is the fuel injector resistance pack, use only in the flavor fed). There is also a californiaspecific vesrion. If you do not already know. I presume, a fire would not burn to the ground the heat exchange boxes, and they are different in the fed flavor vs the california flavor (if you intent to reuse thoses). Just saying. I hope that you know
For the kind of questions you have. I like to use exploded views. For instance , your first question, in this view, we can see that there is a elbow in there. Says NLA, not to many infos, but gives the part number. Ohhh so sweet
With that part number. Have more info , even some reseller for those :
VW part: Rubber Elbow / Breather hose for the Auxiliary air regulator -- 022129637,
Voilà!
Many web site for exploded views. Here's where I took that picture. I read in the faq or in the technical part of this forum, about VAG site (but I think one have to register, which I'm too lazy to do).

The elbow at arrow #1 is part number 022-129-637 (or 022129637), available from most suppliers.
I think the Crankcase Breather Valve (#2) is truly NLA, if yours is melted you will need to find a good used one. _________________ 1981 Vanagon, Aircooled 2.0 AFC

Elbow for Aux Air Regulator

As for #4. From what I understand since the automatic doesn't use the decel valve and that hose is unnecessary because the automatic EFI doesn't split off of the boot in a "Y", it's just a direct hose to the Aux Air Regulator.
Edit: Avery's Aircooled in Washington might have the crankcase breather you need. They ship used parts all over the world.

I'd agree with what the others have posted so far.
Pathao/anyone do you know where we can get exploded views with part numbers? Maybe in printed form? This would be so incredibly helpful. Especially for someone like me that does not always know the name VW uses to identify the parts. |

Thanks everyone. I have all of the parts I need. Avery's Aircooled had the crankcase breather. _________________ 1983 Westy (air cooled)
