Does someone know the size of the brake spring tool for a 69? I would like to pick one up so I don't have to keep using a pair of pliers. The ones I've found have one side 5/8 - 11/16 on one side and 11/16 - 7/8 on the other. Do I need metric sizes for this? _________________ John

I use a 17mm socket on an extension. It's always in my tool box and I don't need to hunt for a special tool. _________________

Bruce,
The 12 points inside the socket are enough to turn the disk so the little pin will line up? _________________ John

Whipped this up a number of years ago from some scrap steel. Works great - can see the pin to line it up. I use it with a pair of vice grips normally. Total width is around 9/16", cutout is around 1/4" wide by 1/8" deep.

I've used one like this for over 4 decades now
Most auto parts stores should have something similar for under $15.
I think the smaller of what you asked about would work for the shoe retaining springs/cups.
For the traditional type brake springs, I've always just grabbed on the straight part with genuine Vise-Grip pliers. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each.
