ummmm. with paint? seriously though... you can mask off the rest of the cap and then spray the logo, or some actually use paint with a brush and just take their time. either will work. _________________ 64 No'back Speedster "Pearl"

The easiest way is to first scuff the chrome with some 80 grit paper. Then use a paste wax and wax the entire hubcap EXCEPT for the emblem to be painted. Spray the emblem with several light but even coats of spray paint. Let dry. Then take a clean rag and wipe the wax with overspray right off. You're done! |

I've tried the brush and realised I suck with a brush. Tired the masking tape and wasn't very good at that either. Might try the wax next...would surf wax work allright?

Have you ever tried to remove surf wax? My friend uses gasoline! Maybe you could bring them to the art department at school?! _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

ha surf wax! i love that. brushes work if your relaxed enough to hold a brush...... or you can get some finger nail paint and poor a little in the vw sign..... rotate the hub cap around so the paint flows around inside the sign. dont rotate it too much or it will run out of the vw (the groove). if you do just scrape it away with a razer blade. this is how they use to do it back in the day and the paint wont chip off and it leaves a nice smooth finish. Spraying and then touchup with a very fine artist's brush seems to be the preferred and most common method. |

Get the 3M blue tape too, it will make this job a lot easier. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

I will let you in a little secret I learned restoring over "10 cars" .. Paint the logo on the hub cap then get a smooth rag dip it in a little paint remover and put in on a flat piece of wood or whatever as long as it`s flat then rub it on the logo , you should get the paint around the logo off without even touching the \/
\/\/ logo. _________________ CRG

I've done it with masking tape, not too hard, just a lot of work. Get some good masking tape, not the $1 a roll garbage walmart sells, go to an auto paint store, or at least a hardware store. Cover the logos completely with tape, press it down into the \X/ with your thumbnail or some other tool, just don't tear the tape. Press it hard enough and you'll have a perfect line to cut with an Xacto knife, use a NEW SHARP blade, in the crease, cut away. Change your blades often, and oh yeah, scuff up the chrome first and tape off everything you don't want overspray on, and also don't expect spray paint to last forever. Spray a few light coats, be patient, read the can, etc. etc. And if you screw up, you can dab a little thinner on a Q-tip and wipe away your mistakes. |

Wow ..... glad to see others have done this chore. I think I'll practice on some old caps first ......... I was really hoping somebody would have a template already made to do this job. |

i have done many chrome caps, the way everett does it. easy. on gray caps however that i have attemped, its better to mask it off with tape if you painted it grey yourself (as opposed to a powder coated cap) because when you go to remove the white overspray, you will end up also removing the grey.
after finding this out, i purchased a set of the logo inserts mentioned above. they were slightly too small and were a pain it the butt to get in place and they all bunched up when you tried to push them on. i wasnt happy at all with the quality and the seller was kind enough to refund my money. i still have the terrible inserts on my panel bus' caps and surprisingly theyre still on there. _________________ Jahnai Pearson - VW Restoration Technician

Yes, I have done chrome hubcaps when they are still a bit wet.
On these grey ones, I let it dry for an hour. I also did 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart as the Krylon laid down better for me that way. If I remember right, I did one thick layer of black for my chrome caps but it wasn't Krylon paint.
I used very little lacquer thinner on the rag, just enough to dampen it. I hold the rag tight up to the can and tip the can against it. Then sort of spread the thinner out across the rag by dabbing it with another rag.
I did a bunch of testing on a 5th hubcap before I did my 4 for the truck. I ended up using the test hubcap in the end as it came out better than 2 of the others. _________________ How to Post Photos

I like the "wipe off" method alot. Will be using that method soon on chrome caps.
FYI- If you do need to use masking tape for this project or another, there is a new green kind at Home Depot called "FROG" tape. Stuff works great for latex and oil-base with clean edges and no bleed-through. About $5 a roll, much better than either of the 2 kinds of 3M blue masking tape. _________________ 1967 13 window walkthru bus

i have done many sets of chrome caps, and my method is a little different. clean the cap with some *wax and grease* remover, fog several coats of semi gloss black over the depressed logo, then....using a little piece of 000 steel wool under my fingertip, i methodically remove the unwanted paint. you get great control on the edges. when you are all done, take some mothers aluminum polish on your finger and rub it over the paint and voila! if you burn thru anywhere, or leave a little bit of an uneven edge...it just makes it look more random and legit like a real survivor cap. love those gray caps ev! _________________ 40-horses to freedom! |

dave, what does the mother's polish do?seems like it would really take the paint back off? Is it more for the distressed look? thanks _________________ 1967 13 window walkthru bus
