Ok Vanagon guru's, here's a question I have for your expertise.
I have an '82 air-cooled westy. The brake lights, on both sides, are lighting up when they shouldn't be, ie even with the engine off, keys out, the brake lights are ON. Now, when I depress the brake pedal, they turn OFF. Fluid reservoir is full, the brakes are not mushy, all lines have been bled.
Back ground: I just picked the van up from the local shop and had the rear brakes serviced. They didn't mess with the master cylinder as far as I know. They also replaced new brake light bulbs and a fuse.
Any idea's why there would be this contradictory operation? I called the shop and was given a waffley, non-descript answer of "van's are old, maybe time for an entire new wiring harness.." etc. didn't seem to be too interested in pursuing the issue.
