Hey guys, sorry for the long post. I'm fairly new to the site. Just recently painted my car and put the tail lights on and I have no brake lights or turn signals. My rear lights are plugged up right bc I labeled the plugs and also checked a diagram online.

When I got this car someone had put a second ignition in and had the flashers and master cylinder ran to fuse #9. The only way the flashers and brake lights would work is to run the wire on #9 fuse.

So today I took the dash out to get a close look at the wiring to see exactly what has been done to in in the past.

As you can see the wires ran to #9

A wire from the flasher lead not going to anything

Cut wires on factory ignition. I hooked them up and tried the switch and the electric fuel pump cut on but it did not turn over. Is it a bad ignition? If so idk why they wouldn't have just replaced it.

This is how the wires were when I got the car. are the switches plugged up right? Rear parking lights work. I really hate having to plug in the turn signals but at least before paint they worked now I have no signals or brake lights not to mention the bulb holders don't hold the bulbs tight. Also passenger side rear parking lights are dim. Tried new bulbs and nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

BUMP

I recently installed disc brakes on the front and havent bled the lines yet that may be why the brake lights arent working.

Still cant figure out why the turn signals dont work.
Black/green wire goes to a 2 prong flasher lead with a blue wire not going to anything connected to the same prong as black/green
Second prong is a blue wire running to #9 fuse which had to be plugged in when needing turn signals when it worked before the paint job.
Any help would be great thanks again!

There has to be a continuous electrical connection from the main car body, to the fender, and onto and within the light fixture itself.

Many times called bad grounds.

make sure the route from the negative side of the bulbs makes the trip through the new paint to metal.

Too much to try to help in a post like this.

I agree with Cusser on this one. You have a helluva fucockted wiring mess there. No way to really help unless there in person. You will need to trace each circuit. I would also look into getting some vw connectors such as follows:

and

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111937077

*make sure the battery is disconnected before doing any electrical work*

Get a soldering iron, heat shrink tubing and crimpers and do it right. Those little wire taps are sh*t.

Time to undo the PO mistakes which can be a pain. Most of the time electrical "fixes" were because they didn't want to find the real reason behind the problem.

Good luck

(you mean like hard start relays? ive removed ever single one ive ever seen. its less effort to actually fix the underlying issues)

Why is nearly every VW hacked to shit in the wiring department?!

90% of the time all the right parts are there, and just need new connections crimped on...

OP-

best i can reccomend is focus on one circuit at a time, wether they work or not in the first place.

go through and verify connections are proper at each pint. once that circuit works, move on to the next one. these hack jobs are easy to fix, but time consuming...
