Not being able to see the video, is this a single cable install or a two piece with the EGR box?

merry christmas ! its single cable. Is this correct according to the book? I have to disconnect it behind dash , run it through the floor to the wheel push it put the rubber thing on the cable push cable through the wheel, put pin on cable to hold it in place, push rubber thing to back of wheel to keep dust out, and zip tie the cable to the chassis and thats it ..follow instrictions at own risk I think thats what it says in the idiot guide and follow instructions at own risk.. and if you want to see the video you can join my patreon page and make cash donation to see it..

sounds about right but mine are E-clips not pins that hold it from falling out of the wheel bearing cover. FWIW on late bays with the EGR box, the EGR box can go bad and cause issues for the speedo. Of the ones I opened to clean, hoping to find a good one to do the RAtwell hack for an oil change reminder, most were damaged beyond use from water. A one piece early cable can be used to replace the two piece EGR / CAT box, getting rid of the clicking and clanking that box can do when they go bad.

If you think you may be immersing your left front tire/wheel in axle-deep water it is a good idea to smear a little RTV on the E-clip. If you do not reseal it, water intrusion may get to your two-piece front wheel bearing assembly & time to buy instead of repack. I believe VW used a wax to do it back in the day but RTV seems to be the modern answer. YMMV.

Thankyou for explaining why my US driver's side front wheel bearing has failed twice because of water ingress.
On one occasion the water was washing along the bottom of the bus in a river flood where I was taking a route around a flooded closed road and ended up driving gently downhill across the river flood plain on a minor road, in ever deeper water until I turned back.
..and the wheel bearing failed a few weeks later..

I pack a lot of wheel bearings. The cars with wheel bearings like this are all missing their speedometer cable sealing goop.

Most of them have surface corrosion on the spindle axle too.

you should see the inside of the front axle beam and the rear torsion tubes if you like to ford streams etc.. Been there. Its ugly if you don't get to it quickly. There isn't enough heat to drive any moisture out.

And for those of you who haven't owned boat trailers, the way it works is the air and grease in a wheel bearing heats up. When cold water hits the axle, the air and grease cool, which creates a small vacuum inside the hubs. That draws in water. You can't avoid it unless you have pressurized hubs, like Buddy bearings. There are special marine wheel bearing greases that are designed to help protect the bearings. Use it if you plan on offroad etc crossing streams or parking in river beds during flood season.

Rusted out beams and torsion tubes are not something a bus owner wants to confront.

It’s Boxing Day in Canada. Go out to Juggle Mart and get that BOGO faux bowling pin. Maybe stock up on 10 glow sticks for a loonie.

I think it states in one of the manuals ratwell or idiot manual to pack the speedo cover, that thing you tap onto the drum in the front and the cable goes through with grease, grease repels water. Would that solve the problem of the wheel bearing going bad?

I thought Boxing Day - 26th December was a purely British holiday; corresponding to the day when servants received a "Christmas Box" (i.e. gift or monetary bonus) from the family which employed them.

I learned years ago to always smear some grease on the spindle.

If the cable sheathing is old and cracked that can let water get to the bearings as well.

I think the stereotype may be In Canada we have Boxing Day it is a holiday. The day after christmas. Although some stores are open and they have massive sales example a big chain electronics has a some tv or computer or laptop or phone that goes on sale for 50%off. On that day there are huge line ups for stores that day and a lot of folks go out shopping for a major deal.. on stuff.. It can be fun if you like shopping eh! oh yeah and cip1 has a sale this week

Yes Nigel and Christmas is a Christian festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Somehow people find a way to capitalize on materialism. Kind of like the OP in his post asking for cash. He still wants money for his shaky video so we can offer help for free. Wink I think Erb lost the spirit of vintage VW ownership and the spirit of The Samba.
