Im buying a bus tomorrow. Found it on here. Thanks !!

The shifter seems a bit sloppy, gear pattern is not real solid, kinda have to search for the slot.

Is this adjustable ? Is there a replaceable insert, never thought about how to fix this before..

Any input ?

Your first purchase, even before you buy a tie dye shirt to go with the bus is the Bentley service manual. Without it, you're pretty much screwed.

The first place to look for the slop is at the front of the shifter assembly beneath. Remove the pan that protects the pedals, and you'll see where the shifter connects to the shift rod. There is a bushing that nose of this shift rod rides in. Usually, the bushing has disintegrated. $5 fitting.

This is only usually the problem. There are others, but this is where to go first.

Also, you'll now be replacing all of your fuel lines.

Yes, it's adjustable.
There are several replaceable "inserts" in the shift linkage that differ depending on year.
Time to start thinking about how to fix things unless you want to pay a mechanic to use simple reasoning skills for you.
There are many resources at your disposal...

Best advice you'll get in this thread:
The Bentley procedure for adjusting the shifter is absurdly incomprehensible.
Some of the new VW branded shift coupler cages are not square and will not work regardless of shift lever adjustment.

First check the bracket that attaches the shifter to the floor inside the bus. It may just be loose, mine was. I believe later models have a bracket with slots in it which make it adjustable. I adjusted mine and tightened it up. Now I have a nice tight shift pattern. It may also be the stop plate underneath the bracket.

Even so, you still might need a new bushing, but it doesn't hurt to start with the real simpe no brainier stuff. Smile

The first thing I do with any "new" VW I get is install a racing shifter. Shorter throw. More precision. Reverse lockout.

There are 3 or 4 things that could cause this.

1) As mentioned, the front bushing on the shift rod
2) The shift coupler at the front of the transmission
3) Having the reverse lock out plate in backwards
4) A broken bracket in the transmission nose cone
5) Bad plastic ball on end of hockey stick

Run this by me again. Where are you? Where is the bus?

A 1600 in that model year was only available in non-USA markets. Is this a USA market bus?

Are you mechanically inclined?

Resurrecting this thread! Thanks for the incredibly useful photos areomech.

I lost 3rd and 4th gear. Hoping my problem is somewhere between the gear shifter and nose cone. Useful info. I've been searching the forum before starting my own thread.

If anyone knows a one stop shop to source parts, I can't find part #'s for the front nylon bushing/shifter coupling rubber inserts/selector link/selector link ball joint/nose cone gasket. Found some stuff at Busdepot, but not everything.

TIA!
