PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2016 7:52 pm    Post subject: 66-67 Hub Caps Reply with quote

I need to start sourcing some hubcaps for my daughters 67. I searched the forums but couldn't really answer my question.

If I'm at a swap meet, how do I tell I have the right Hub Cap before I buy it?

Is there an easy tell tale sign?

66-67 are 66-67 only so if you want the "correct" ones, look for these caps with the larger raised center section:

Is the diameter of the raised section what is bigger or is it the height of the raised section? What about the back of the cap, is there anything that tells me they are for a type 3 vs. type 1?

The height of the raised section is the main indicator.

These caps are Type 3 only.

I dug up some photos from some I sold years ago to show the profile better.
Here they are:

Yes....that was a joke...but seriously....I have seen some hubcaps that have the puller holes at 12 o'clock.....some at 3:00 o'clock....all different types....there seems to be no rhyme or reason.

Are they all different part #'s?

Don't get me started on those chocolate W&Ws I see hiding in M&M packages!

My '71 has the flatter hubcaps common to the Bugs and Buses, I think. From memory, they don't have the protruding bump for the logo.

Or maybe it was a cold day you photographed yours. I live in sunny SoCal.

Yes, '68- on is the flat Bug Bus style.

Thanks,

Hopefully I can figure it out at the next Pomona swap meet and not end up with a 4 lefts or 4 rights.

Actually, it looks like they are pretty identifiable, I see how much they protrude out on the VW logo.

Thanks for the help, and the laugh.

Yes... but for a Beetle, not a Type 3. Type 3 used similar hubcaps in the 1961-5 wide 5 era, but the "VW" emblem is pressed in, not out.

'66/7 Type 3, again, are four lug cars and they use a hubcap that pops OVER, not into, the hub cap lugs. '66/7 Type 3 has a RAISED VW emblem area, with the VW stamped facing out.

I think I understand what your referring to with the emblem portion, but I'm failing to see the difference between what Everette posted and these, ugh

Yes, they are 66-67 Beetle hubcaps being advertised with 64-65 Type 3 wheels.

It's hard to tell from those ad photos but the centers are not pressed out as much.

The earlier Type 3 and 66-67 Beetle hubcaps have an edge that looks like this as they clip into the INSIDE of the wheel center:

66-67 Type 3s clip to the OUTSIDE of the wheel center so they don't have a double lip like that.

I think that little explanation and pictures is all I needed to be able to figure it out.

Thanks again.

OK, lets see if I'm getting better at this. Found these on Craigslist but it was hard to tell what they were, so I had the guy send some other pics.

Now that I have them, I don't think they are 66-67 Type 3.

Are these later type 3 hubcaps? Did I get it right? Sorry, Correct?

Yes, those are 68-up 4-lug wheel hubcaps.

Bug or Type 3 or Ghia - they are all the same for those hubcaps
