Well I got in over my head with this bus, especially since I am a novice. With a minimal investment to get it, I got it home and have started to work on it with the help and generosity of some very good VW people here in Albuquerque. I ran the M-code plate and this one had an original destination to New Orleans, which was very cool to me because I lived there for a few years in my early 20's, and I love that city. I named it Tipitina after a song by the New Orleans musician Professor Longhair. It is also a 1970 bus from the year I was born, making it that much more special to me. My plans in the short term are to get it running and drivable. I am also converting the interior to a camper as ultimately its what I want to do with it, and I probably wont ever be carrying 9 people in it at any given time. This is it coming home. And one kicking it with the square at home.

Here's some more pictures. This is going to be time consuming as I am a working class stiff. I am already having a great time with it. Engine is clean and ready to go through and make a list of whats needed. I have my tins and some other bits cleaned and painted on the engine etc...Just need money and time now ha!
I have replaced the sliding door with one that has no rust. I also put in some Jalousie windows that came with the bus.

I would hold onto that other sliding door in case someone wants to match the patina it up later. |

There wasn't much to hold on to. That said i took a lot of photos, and with that useless art degree of mine, I am fairly confident I could match it myself!

You're getting after it! How long had it been sitting? I thought I saw a bias-ply tire on the RF! It looks like you picked a good solid bus to bring back to life.
What color are you going to paint it? _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Im trying, to get it going on. Its going to be a process. I think it had been sitting in Colorado may be since the 80's or 90's
Those tires gotta go. Actually the rims too. There are 2- 15's and 2-14's on there. I just had 4 -14's powder coated, so they are ready, but I need to put some temporary used tires on it for now.
I am hoping to eventually paint it its original brilliant blue and cloud white top. For now it will be a patina beast. Thanks for the encouragement. _________________ 1961 Single Cab

And likely the sector bracket inside the nose cone too, bummer.

It's supported, was not when I took the photo. It was an oh shit moment when we pulled the engine. Hopefully it's ok, but the whole thing will be gone through and rebuilt soon. _________________ 1961 Single Cab

Don't feel bad. We've all done that. I know I have a few times and luckily didn't do any damage other than bend the crap out of the coupler cage. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

First time I took the beam off I could not figure out why it wouldn't drop to the ground. Some idiot didn't take out the front shift rod and bent the crap out of it. _________________ Wash your hands

I finally got my sunroof open today. It was so full of debris. I was lucky enough to obtain a good used roof panel and interior panel. The exterior roof panel was banged up bad. It was nearly impossible to open, but not without damaging the interior panel as well in the process. One of the cables seems to be broken I believe. It's a long way from being functional, but at least it is on it's way somewhere. One drain is clear and works, 2 drains kinda work but leak into the cargo area and inside the outside panel, so I know the tubes must have holes inside the panels. One is clogged for sure and one just barely drips. Lots of problem solving to do there. Can you run rubber tubes down the inside of old rusted metal ones to drain out? At what point would one of you out there consider the sunroof a loss and weld it up or put a pop top? I plan on fighting to the point of insanity to get it working, but sometimes wonder just how much is too much.

While I am saving money and biding my time to get parts and time to work on this bus, I decided to make myself some commercial style hubcaps out of the beaters I had. I like how they turned out.
