Hi there,
I have a 1987 transporter with a DJ engine, purchased it about a year and 6000km ago.
When I bought it i had the heads overhauled.
Two weeks ago I was stupid enough to get stuck in some quicksand and while revving the engine in 1st gear and trying to get out, the coolant hose that connects the thermostat to the coolant tower exploded.
After replacing this hose & bleeding the system, the engine kept building pressure in the cooling system, spiting coolant from the overflow tank and heating, but only when driving (not when idile)
then I found out that the thermostat is stuck , so I replaced it, but the problem still remained.
Next thing I did was a compression test and the results were 150 150 150 & 100.
I decided to pool out the head with the low compression.
The green cylinder gaskets were deformed and I could see some signs of pressure/gas leaks.
The mechanic who worked on my car claims that the head looks just fine.
I'm not so sure about it though...
the attached images shows the worn green gasket, the head with the gaskets and the head after removing the gaskets and a bit of cleaning.
Please advice.

Please change the title of your thread to something that is not so generically vague!
something that can be found easily by anyone looking for it in the future.
Like 2.1 DJ Eng Cylinder Head Problem.
check your thermostat to see if it has a small hole in the valve plate that opens/closes so that any air trapped under the closed thermostat can vent preventing a blockage in the system.
What is it you do not like about the heads? _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
