So first of all... Hello from the new guy. Ive been looking at threads on this forum for years but never needed to post. (Unfortunately) I have just bought a Eurovan that now only works in reverse.
I realised I can get a rebuilt transaxle from GT or Go Weasty... but them being $4000+ and then $800 min to get them fitted (around where I am in Glendale,CA), it is a lot of money to lay out.
I'm wondering if anybody has had or heard of any experience with Eurovan transmissions being rebuilt by AAMCO?
I spoke to the guy there and he says he has two in right now, one with a compleat overhaul needed and was $4250 with warranty.
He also explained that it could be much less than this price, depending on what needs doing and that I could get up a 3 year warrenty for less than it would cost for the alternative pre-rebuilt transaxle.
What are your guys thoughts? |

Be careful when comparing the two, the go westy price does not include shipping to & from or the very strong possibility of not receiving a full core return value ($3500). If they deemed your core junk, that price + shipping + labor could be close to $10,000. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Hummm.... sounds like AMMCO is the more attractive option at the moment.
Thanks for your advice! |

If someone will rebuild yours locally I would go that route.
That's what I did - and it came with a 3 year warranty - and it's actually had to go back twice to work out the kinks. _________________ Been on the samba so long I remember petting that dog to see VWs, WYHI, and green bug girl.

Ours was rebuilt locally by an ATRA shop that was recommended by our mechanics. Overall we ended up paying a little less than 5k by the time all was set and done (including cooler install). We had issues with replacement valve bodies (2x) and they ended having to do a bunch more work but it was all covered by a 2/24 warranty (national) and we had a loaner from them while the van was in the shop. Although I was unsure at first I am glad we did it locally as I can walk back in there for another 18 months if something goes wrong.
This EV wasnt their first Rodeo, they had another one before and a bunch of other VW cars, Sprinters, Mercs and US stuff waiting. These trannies are not rocket science apparently.
With warranty I'd go local again but I would also set expectation that other stuff pops up, like Axle replacements etc.
