I picked up an early 1986 a couple of weeks ago that had been sitting for about 10 years. A rust free body and a clean engine/trans made me think it was salvageable.
After reconnecting a half dozen wires ( mouse bites) I got all the rear lights working again.
My question concerns the attached photo...
1) Number #1 is a small plastic rectangle with 3 wires (r,y,g) on one end and (y,g) on the other. It looks like one end goes the the wire bundle to the tail lights and the other end goes forward. No numbers, names or marks on the box. Any ideas?
2) #2 in the photo is a female connector coming out of the OX harness. Two white wires to the OX sensor but three wires out the other end.
3) #3 is a heavier gauge green wire with a male end (sort of looks like it should be connected to #2) and #4 is a smaller red wire with a female end. I realize there are often connectors in a harness that aren't hooked to anything but maybe these should be? I haven't started it yet for several reasons but I would like to sort these wires first. Bentley's wasn't any help.
4) Lastly, the OX light in the dash...it's on when the key is turned on and since the motor hasn't been started yet I can't tell if it will go off when started. I've tried the reset button on the speedo cable but it stays on.
From what I can tell from the forum and Bentley's this is just a light that comes on every 30,000 miles to warn of a need for a sensor replacement and isn't connected to anything else. If that's the case, how about just unplugging it from the speedo box? Will that affect anything else?
My last VW was a 1972 Westy and going from that to this is like going from grade school to college....pretty steep learning curve!
Any help here will be appreciated. |

#3 O2 coax, body harness
#2 coonects to #3
That black box does not look oem. eg butt splice connectorsmare not oem.
Trailer wiring box?
Youre dealing with a heated O2 sensor. White wires are for the O2 heater. _________________ 1981 Westy DIY 15º ABA

Thanks for the responses. They clear up a few of my questions but i still don't know about wire #4 in the photo. All I know is that there is no power to it, key on or off.
Also... "4) Lastly, the OX light in the dash...it's on when the key is turned on and since the motor hasn't been started yet I can't tell if it will go off when started. I've tried the reset button on the speedo cable but it stays on.

I doubt it affects the OXS but I would like to be sure. |

If you have seen the bentley there isn't much to add. Power from the regulator, through the light, switched at the rpm counter to ground. There's another weird wire on the counter that has something in common with alt warning system, but I didn't grok that in the short time I had the book open, myself.
Don't have it here, now... _________________ The wise man learns from history, the fool from experience.
