If you buy GoWesty zero-lift springs and they include their upper balljoint spacers, I have found that you should not install the spacers. By raising the UCA's at standard lift height they become horizontal, rather than drooping at a slight downward angle as they're supposed to. This reverses the designed-in toe-in on suspension compression to toe-out, creating an understeer response when oversteer is what's intended (and is the way most front suspensions work).
The undesirable effect is apparent under many driving conditions but most jarring when the van is hit by a gusty crosswind. The body roll creates an understeer response that causes the van to veer downwind, when normally the steering reaction is into the wind, making it much easier to keep the van on your line and in your lane.
The spacers correct steering geometry when a high-lift spring is installed, but at standard lift height they create an undesirable and potentially dangerous condition.
Other than that, pretty nice springs. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Zero lift does not need any spacing.
+2, definitely. |

Uh-huh, that's what I said. The warning is because GW is including the spacers with their zero-lift spring sets, implying that they should be used.
Nice pieces of kit, save them for if you lift later. _________________ Shop for unique and useful Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Thats funny that they include them with the zero lift springs and aren't needed, because the last three sets of +2s I have received didn't come with them.

I'm reopening this to ask the suspension/alignment gurus - question is - Is this true for 2WD only? for spring clearance and ball joint clearance issues while using fox shocks (because of the increased drop down) I'm going to be using burley UCA. these will have a horizontal angle at my chosen ride height of 19.5. According to this thread that will result in negative camber, causing increased bump steer. From all I can tell from experimentation the syncro has only increasing negative camber upon suspension compression, regardless on UCA angle. So... do I not have to worry about a horizontal UCA in a syncro? |
