This is probably a redundant question but here goes:
I've got a '71 Ghia Coupe Autostick - never drove it - but I can tell it hasn't run in a long time - original plan was going to try and fire it up with overhauled carb, new fuel pump, and overhauled distributor. But watching videos it seems likely the autistick will need a new diaphragm and closely inspected and cleaned.
Pushrod tubes are rusty looking but engine does turn over and will crank. But seeing as I plan to keep this and will be doing a mild restoration - body and paint thought why not pull the engine and just go through it - I'm sure the seals are hard. But also thinking an autostick would take less of a beating over the years than a manual as it's harder to abuse (in theory).
When I look online at the various parts sellers, a lot of the kits include a new crankshaft and heads. So let's assume crank is okay and heads just need cleanup and new valves and springs - are there kits out there that include a new cam, valves, p/c's, lifters, rings, and bearings.
I'm sure there are similar threads on this topic and any links / words of wisdom are appreciated. Thanks much
Ken

Take it apart and find out whats good and what needs to be replaced. "kits" are generally put together for a specific price point and they don't use the best parts. _________________ Glenn

| Thanks Glen & also for referring me to Bill Fowler who overhauled the autostick distributor. |

Glenn beat me to it! but this one is more deluxe.
Kits do work nice when every rebuild is the same or at least 60% the same.
But with these engines it doesn't make much sense.
-Order what you need.... once you know,
-have everything in stock already,
-or get to know someone that does like a local vw shop.
Like you'd think you would always need exhaust valves and pistons and cylinders BUT.....
I've not had to buy pistons and cylinders very often because half the time the "last guy" replaced those recently. Sometimes the cam is bad but sometimes it isn't. I guess the most common thing is rods. You pretty much always need rebuilt rods and a gasket set.
And that's just mostly because a lot of times the rods are neglected or done wrong. Although that's not part of a kit, that's machine work, tho it's fine to have your machine work done remotely....... but that would be a pretty heavy kit since it would contain the entire engine. Engine kits are traditionally sold to go with the machine work. One stop shopping. But it never caught on in the VW sector. I would think mofoco could provide something like that, but does not seem to be very popular. Sorry I'm rambling. |

Love those "Deluxe Kits"
Glad I've had other projects to complete before attacking my Ghia project. Have learned a lot here and watching YouTube videos about the Autostick - am pretty excited to get it working - I know it'll be fairly gutless but that's okay for this point in my life. Seems more like a novelty. |
