Cleaning up engine tin. How to disassemble breather? Is there a special tool/socket?

You can use an internal pipe wrench:

pull out the sleeve, you'll see it's a big flat blade , but the wrench I have like this sucks, I bought the plumbing wrench to get mine off

Nate, I bought this tool, and I agree; it is THE TOOL to use.

Unfortunately, mine was so tite, the cast stand itself cracked before letting go. Shattered the nut too. Mad

steel and aluminum/magnesium like to weld themselves together over time.

heat is one thing that can help them come apart. a "farmer fix" I learned from a customer for getting stubborn bearing races out, was to mig weld a bead around the race to shrink the bearing in the bore and they pop, and fall right out. works great on my Porsche 944 trailing arms.
