Just wondering what everyone is running for an ignition system? Stock with points or an electronic system thanks in advance |

Heard a lot of pros and cons for both. Seems many carry spare dist. for road side failure since its so easy to swap dist. on these things rather than repair on roadside. |

I run a VW10 and have been completely satisfied with it over the past few thousand miles. It's a departure from Bosch based distrubitors in that it's a Nippon Denso adaptation to VW use. |

A VW10 is a Richporter copy of the 009. You're lucky since many have reported many problems.
Everyone's ignition will be different depending on the engine.
We have a dedicated topic on points vs electronic if you're interested.

Yes....
For a stock engine with a stock carb, you're best bet is the stock distributor. _________________ Glenn

I have both units. The VW10 is a completely different distrubitor platform. Like I said it's based on mid 80's Japanese units. It is in no way related to or shares any parts compatibility with a Bosch or an electronically converted Bosch. It's literally as different from a Bosch as a GM HEI is. For the $120 you pay for it with a lifetime warranty (if purchased through a major parts chain) there's basically zero risk to owing one. If you are nervous save the old spark scattering 009 for a emergency roadside repair to get home.

You can run just about anything, if you want. all kinds. I've got a old bosche 009, altered curve, goes to msd timing computer, then TFI module, then old canister coil, japan 1975! Never will die.
IMO the timing computer works better with inductive pickup like the vw 10 "denso" type mentioned above, actually, but it works OK with points, just ok, not great. All the MSD stuff says it works with points, still says that, but they are mostly ignoring it these days. They are leaving out some of the critical parts that make that work. WHo uses points? 5% of their custoemrs, so they get the shaft.
Canister coils....a lot of crap out there, chinese, and crap distributors too. Your better off stick with the old ones than a new copy.
New, try CB magnaspark. it's new, but it's new tech, should work. Rather than trying to duplicate the old stuff. Your never going to, back then it MATTERED, now it does not.
Most of my cars came WITH distributors, that worked fine, so why buy new ones?
But I hear there is short supply these days, from some folks.
Lot of folks run CDI, I did for awhile, didn't prefer it. It's hard on parts. You need good wires and solid rotor.
Most CDi boxes.... it'll eat the stock ones, quick.
MSD is not what it used to be. Don't drop too much money on them, nor petronix. Don't like the direction those companies are going......forging ahead with NEW tech, but hadn't yet perfected the old pruducts:roll: Like a kid with ADD |

After getting fed up with various points replacement module setups, I am a die-hard fan of points. I use a cast-iron (more accurate than aluminum) VJU4BR8 SVDA, with points, a Bosch blue coil (for now, my MSD was leaking oil more than I cared for) and a Ford TFI module. I use an Eichlin brand rotor from Napa auto parts, since it is only 50 ohms, rather than 5000 ohms, and due to quality issues with Bosch. Taylor spiro-pro wires from CB Performance, and NGK BP6HS plugs. I recently picked up a vintage Tiger 500 CDI system to try out.
It works absolutely wonderful with a stock setup on a 1776, and the vacuum can is adjustable (to an extent) to work with many dual carb setups rather well. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

I just run the good ole 09 with pet electronic thingy inside of it and platinum sparking bolts. Im not sure about the people that carry a extra dist with them....do they carry a extra everything too?? who drives it? do they toe it behind them or push it? I think buss ticket might be cheeper or.... a good shop that knows how to properly fix the car so it's reliable. on a nother note my car is my daily driver and has been for....15 years...although it is now a fair weather car...it has a wiper blade that has a slight shread comming offit...dam crap we get for wipers these days, it's only about 6 months old...Ill have to dig out the old ones and put them back on. when i get a round tuit. |

I was in love with my 019 until I tried the VJU4BR8; it's basically an 019 with adjustable vacuum advance.

That is one beautiful looking oval. Any more photos?
How do you like that Jacobs ignition you have in the engine bay? I was running a Jacobs unit with their coil, but I kept burning up the contacts in the stock size Bosch distributor cap and wearing out the gap fast in the spark plugs so I removed it.
Previoulsy I ran the Tiger CDI box for years, but that finally gave up.
I have an old Bosch Blue coil that I am running now with an aluminum SVDA that I tweaked the stops and the spring perches so that the timing comes in faster and is limited. It works good on my dual dells with the anti pulse valve.
I have one of the cast iron 36hp SVDAs all rebuilt on the bench, but I have not installed it yet. |

A tip for anyone looking for one, the 0231 115 040 is the same thing, just with a different set of numbers, and a slightly different points plate, that lets you use the later style non-dogleg points. The great thing about the 040 is that the restoration guys turn their nose up at them, so they are cheap! My two VJU4BR8 are actually 040's, and they were each only 35 shipped, and just needed a clean-up, coat of paint, and re-lube. Both came with new-ish points, and the original condensor on one still works just fine!
For anybody who cares, the Eichlin points and rotor from Napa auto parts fit and work well, and the points are nicer than the current Bosch sets-
Rotor (50 ohm, Bosch is 5000 ohm)-

Points-

The generic cap you find around (I think it's made by BWD, the one from CIP1 and my local O'Reilly auto parts are identical, down to the mold flashing lines) works, but I like the ones from Wolfsburg west the best. If anybody has a link to a cheap Bremi I'd like to try one. The newer Bosch ones don't impress me at all.
They are a fun little sleeper distributor, that's for sure!
