I have a new rebuilt 1600 engine in my car. It has been running fine for the last couple of weeks. Yesterday after I start the car, the idle is very slow and the engine turns off. At every stop light I have to keep my foot on the gas to give it some gas to keep it from turning off.
Why is it doing this? I have not adjusted anything on the carburator. I'm running the stock carburator with .009 distributor. |

Maybe you have some crud in the fuel lines ? I would guess you have dirt blocking something. Pull the fuel line going to to your carb. VERY IMPORTANT With the fuel line pointed away from your face & the engine compartment, have a helper crank the engine. You should have a strong stream of fuel exiting the line. If not you need to check everything from the fuel pump back including the fuel tap and screen at the bottom of your fuel tank. If you have a strong stream your carb is causing the trouble and will need to be inspected. |

| No insult to intelligence implied, but is it as simple as the idle screw backing out? Also, sometimes the accelerator cable is adjusted wrong so that it holds the throttle open. Then, as the cable stretches, the throttle shuts down onto the too-low idle screw. |

Since the problem is fairly sudden, I'd suggest it's not the idle screw working it's way loos or the throttle cable stretching. As well, since it runs at higher throttle settings, I'd bet it's not starving for fuel from a clogged line.
My guess is the idle circuit inside the carb is clogged. Refer to this document so you'll know where to look (Section 3-6 30/34 PICT-3 idle operation).
Did you do anything else at all in the engine compartment? Even something un-related? _________________ Jason Hamilton

I have not done anything in the engine compartment lately. I did a body/chasis swap about four months ago and already cleaned out the gas tank of all the crud and replaced the little filter that is fitted in the gas tank where the fuel goes out at the bottom. Also have installed a new fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carburator. All fuel lines were replaced at the time I did the body/pan swap.
Could it be the cold weather? If it is weather related wouldn't the engine run at higher idle until it is warmed up? |

I don't know how cold it is where you are, but does it run okay once it's warmed up? _________________ Jason Hamilton
