Hell All,
Just replaced the wheel contact ring. The enclosed picture is my current dilemma. It took several weeks to finally do it waiting for the the new part and all. It seems I have forgotten how the wheel and pad interface. I understand the positive side that is attached to the replaced ring. but I am left with a baffling ground wire situation. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I am about to drive her off a cliff with locked doors. Thanks a bunch.

Discard the black wire on the pad. If you look closely to the part marked + you'll see a spade connector just below the plastic.
Its not really pos or negative. The horn is completing the ground circuit. No power on that leg. So it is a bit confusing. |

Thanks for your encouraging reply. Are you saying that only the 12v need be connected to the wheel? I did try it utilizing the shown configuration w/o that confusing black wire to no avail. However, this part is shown for sale with that darned wire exactly where I thought it should go. I appreciate greatly for your interest in this. Any more info would be great. Thank you. |

12 volt goes to the actual horn. The horn cover completes the ground to blow the horn. If you take the 2 wires coming from the steering wheel and connect them, the horn needs to toot. If not, you need to do some more troubleshooting. |

I get a toot at the wheel platform.Upon wheel install, there is power via installed ring but unable to get a toot. Assuming grounding issue?Brings up that goofy black wire. Where does it belong? Something tells me that production year 83 brought about more changes than recorded. |

Hello, I think you are over thinking this. The black wire hanging from the cover needs to be discarded. This will leave just the two wires at the wheel. They connect to the brass tangs in the horn button. Thats it.
As I tried to explain above. With the key in the run position, if you connect the two wires in the wheel, the horn must toot. You are completing a ground path for the horn that should already have power from fuse 12. |
