I have a master cylinder in our buggy that looks like this one:

I have a brake leak, that I'm pretty sure is coming from the reservoir either at the plastic or between the master cylinder and the reservoir.

How does one seal the reservoir to the master cylinder? Should I simply buy another reservoir entirely:
http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-211-611-301-CM

I'm used to the rubber grommets or bungs but it looks like this kind doesn't use those.

Should I just get another entire MC kit? I've heard they are mostly garbage so I thought perhaps I should keep the one we have if it's working other than the reservoir.

I'm moderately sure of it's leaking from that spot because:
It looks like it's coming from there, fluid is under that spot.
My reservoir was empty but brakes were still firm when I added fresh fluid without bleeding the system (e.g. didn't appear to be losing fluid on the pressure side)
Leaks while setting, but doesn't seem to leak any additional fluid while using the pedal.

Advise appreciated

I've also had that type start to leak and I don't believe there is anyway to remove and reseal the reservoir on that type of the master cylinder.

Master cylinders with remote reservoirs have replaceable rubber seals on top, which reservoir connectors plug into.

I recommend you buy a later model dual circuit master cylinder and a Volvo type master cylinder which plugs into and sits directly on top of the master cylinder. They don't leak and the dual circuit system is safer

I would look down in the top and bleed the brakes until the fluid level is down in the neck of the existing reservoir and then replace the reservoir and the sealing washer. You already provided a link to the reservoir, here is a link to the sealing washer. There are also aftermarket metal replacements available, I quickly found one here and another here.

What you have is a '66 and earlier Bus master cylinder. They are commonly sold and used in beach buggies.

Thanks to both of you!

I ultimately decided to go with a metal reservoir and metal washer like EVfun recommended. I ordered chrome... not because I'm a chrome guy but because I wanted something metal (I'll prolly strip then paint it before I install it).

I like the idea of the dual master but I am both cash and time poor right now and I see no particular issue with the master cylinder it has in it right now. Though I recognize a dual one would be a safety upgrade it is more costly and would take more time to accomplish.

Sounds like a good opportunity to flush the system through while I'm at it and put fresh brake fluid in it.

Thanks again!

If you have after market single reservoir MC with threaded coupling as indicated above, yes the plastic reservoir is crap and leaks where plastic bowl is bonded the metal portion...

Solved the leak problem on mine by getting full metal reservoir..

Also sealing washer...
