Just interested in hearing from anyone who has bought a 6 volt solid state voltage regulator. Any problems or do they work as well as the 12 volt solid state voltage regulator. They have been around for a while and reviews seem pretty favourable.
Two sources linked below, CIP and WW have quite a price difference. Thoughts.

I think there is already a thread started on this topic. But on the other hand, I seem to remember WW offering 6V regs in original form as well.

They may have at one time but only the new style is now available. Same with CIP.

I have not had a 6-volt car in many years but with the CIP-1 being on sale at $80 I would say for sure give it a try. Solid state technology is far superior at regulating voltage and current in a generator. Also, you could probably make your own with the chip and an old Voltage Regulator housing to put it inside of and an Alternator Diode. Not sure what chip they use but it's probably about $1.26 or something!

Went over and checked, WW offers a solid state unit encased in the original style package... better looking than the other SS offering.

Which other one? The one that CIP sells looks pretty decent to me. (well it has biggie spade terminals, but other than that, in some ways it looks better than the WW variety)

I made it by myself.

About the diode: no, I disagree with using an Alternator diode. They are silicon rectifiers that drop about 0,7V. In a 6V system this is a lot of voltage drop.

Also, when 30Ampere are flowing, you have 0,7v*30A=21W of heat to dissipate, it requires a lot of air to avoid diode burning.

My solution, and also cloverproducts solution, was to use an "ideal diode", a sort of MOS technology rectifier, that drops almost 0V keeping circuitry cold.

A solid state regulator has the main advantage in the diode that, versus the no-return coil, put at 0 the "return current" from battery to generator at idle.

Often when in traffic battery goes down due to 4-5A that mechanical regulator steal to battery towards the inactive generator.

Any chance you could post a schematic or part numbers you used? Most IC parts I'm finding are only rated to ~1.5 amps or require a bunch of 5 watt resistors.

Edit: Found your posting https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8358339

I too would like to see the schematic, The IC part number etc... I think there may be a dedicated dynamo regulator (all in one chip) for this but don't know what it is?
Yes, a "Schottky Diode" not the little silicone diodes for the (generator D+ to Battery Diode) which needs to be capable of at least 30 amps!

Not sure what the current needed to run a 6-volt generator field winding is, Probably about 1 amp.

Not sure, but looking at some values, I think it might be a little bit more than 1 amp.

I would think it would be less than an alternator armature, My 12 volt VW Motorola alternator measures about 4 or 5 ohms across the rings and it is powered off of the little didoes.

Doing some research here The TLE8880 can be purchased from TransistorMosfets.com for $3 and it is a modern automobile alternator excitation device, there may be a way to use it for a generator but It normally is a 12-volt device and it requires a LIN interface to do anything other than a default 14.3 volt output. It is capable of 12 amps excitation current.

There are no generator (not alternator!) chip for a 6V system.

Anyway all alternator ICs need a link to the not rectifyed current, to chek alternator rotaion. In a generator it is impossible because current is rectified by the collector/brushes ensemble.

I'm glad to publish my schematic in the thread I started.
