So. Doing my pre checks on my 85 Automatic westy for a cross country trip yesterday, I was searching for a clunk ive been hearing under the driver side of the van when goin from coasting to accelerating and vice versa. The issue turned out to be much worse than I thought. One of my differential bearings is completely gone, and when I opened my diff cover to investigate, about 1/3 of the "adjusting ring" That holds the outer race of the bearing was sitting in my oil pan. Ive searched for hours to try and find this adjusting ring and am coming up short. I am familiar with setting preload and backlash and the rest of my diff internals are looking ok. Any one have a lead on where to find this adjusting ring? Im guessing finding one new is out of the question, so Im hoping some kind fellow has one sitting on a shelf in their shed they'd be willing to part with Thanks in advance!

Call German Transaxle (541) 382-7723 or some other rebuilder. |

There is a place in Michigan called the Parts Place that specializes in VW. They might sell you just a ring. The problem is, to remove one from a housing renders it unusable for anyone else.
If all else fails, I have a complete differential I would sell. If someone were to purchase it complete, I’d be willing to strip it down and ship just what they want. So worse case, PM me if you don’t find what you are looking for.
Also, I’ve never seen that happen. Some unexpected force had to cause that. I’d be looking all of it over to be sure. Good luck getting it sorted. PS, how about a picture? |
