I bought this bus from an older gentleman a few years ago. His parents were the original owners and traveled the US with it. 100k, all OG and stock.
Been in a shed since 1993. Had been undercoated from new. Finally getting serious with it.
As found...
Gentleman I purchased the bus from.
(Actually 2 busses, a clapped out fastback, 7 Mercedes 240Ds and one Mercedes 300SD!))
After a qick scrub to get the dust off of it. Some thin OG paint, some dings and some scaly surface rust. A couple of places needing a small amount of metal work.
Poptop canvas is excellent shape. Traded some parts for a side tent that the material has no tears but was put up wet and has some mildew staining. Any suggestions to clean that up?
I did this.... Pushed the bus into the shop with the tractor bucket. Bent the overrider and it slid into the nose a bit. Have to love working alone and doing things by yourself!
Engine about ready to break-in on stand. Heads have been rebuilt, new 1800 P/C, reground stock cam and lifters, tin blasted and painted. Ditched the stock carbs for dual 34 ICTs.
Trans pulled and cleaned. New CV joints going in. New TO bearing, clutch and PP was replaced shortly before it was parked and check out fine. Brakes still to be done. New stock style curtains purchased. New front seat upholstery and padding from Sewfine in vinyl/tweed needs to be installed.
Met with my painter this weekend. I'm indecisive about whether or not to pull the windows. The seals are actually in nice shape. I'm replacing the windshield seal for sure. The others are where I'm wavering. Painter says he can pull the OG seal lips out far enough to put some small cord behind them so he can get paint under the seals' lips. I trust him enough to know what he's doing. However, the two rear side window seals, while pliable and decent, do bleed when you wash the bus down. Is there a way to restore them so they don't? I have already purchased all new seals, but I'm hesitant to replace decent seals that don't leak with new aftermarket (WCM) seals that have a chance of leaking. Opinion:
Clean it up, save your cash. Don't paint, preserve. Travel, scratch it up with the kids, the wife, the dogs. Spill shit on the interior and enjoy the crap out of it.
Great bus and nice pics with the original owner _________________ Subaru |

An update. Not many pics, sorry.
New balljoints in. All new brakes.
New brake hoses. New m/c and rebuilt booster.
Repacked rear and front bearings.
Door windows, jalousie windows out.
Interior out and I've cleaned OG floor and scrubbed interior down.
I'll get more pics tomorrow.
Interior scrubbed. Felt like Cinderella.
