|
|
Just did a transmission service on the 2001 GLS and found the the Meyle filter replaced in a shop by the previous owner had detached from the transmission and was just resting in the plan.
Well there goes any filtering for the last 20,000 miles lol.
Luckily the fluid actually looked pretty clean with no particles present.
Was that caused by poor install, or something else? Unlike the Vanagon or any Mercedes I've ever opened up the Eurovan has no hardware holding the filter in place just a press in flange.
Meyle Parts strikes again? |

I found this one time as well -- the filter off in the bottom of the pan.
But... somebody much smarter than me pointed out that the filter is held up from the pan - it secures it in place. So in all likelihood it probably just came off when the pan was dropped and you don't need to worry that it wasn't doing anything. |

It's actually common and no, the pan isn't close enough to hold the filter in place. After diagnosing this as the cause for some transmission drivability issues on a few different VWs, I have been making a retainer bail (out of a coat hanger) that clips to the valve body on every transmission service that I performed on these type of transmissions. There's two little tabs diagonally from each other on valve body that I secure it to. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Volkswagen needs to make a Canadian roads kit to secure that filter in place for use Canadians.
It didnt feel like it fell off when i removed the pan but that it was just sloshing around with the fluid. With the new filter and fluid is running great with better transmission shifting feel (just seat of pants, nothing scientific)

Do you have a photo of the retainer installed? I think I'll be going back in there in the spring.

Sorry, I've never thought to take a pic of one. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
