PO had driven some 3/8 lag screws into the side of the tunnel as seat belt anchors. Nice sharp pointy things!

I pulled them out, as they were keeping the seats from going back far enough for long legs. That worked, but...

I used an endoscope to see where I could move the anchors to, maybe a couple of inches back.

But there seems to be a tunnel within the tunnel, along the top. Can anyone make out what I'm seeing from these pictures?

You are looking at the shift rod.
Confirm by wiggling the shift lever while you are watching your camera.

the brownish rounded object looks as though it's an inverted U shape running along the top of the tunnel.

I don't know what's inside it...
