Here's my 1984 Vanagon GL ASI Converta-Van. I've been searching this site and google. Its the only one I can find. I surely cannot have the only one? Anyone else rolling a converta-van? Id really love to see some other ones. Also ISO my missing table LOL. I sold this van several years ago and have been missing it. I tracked down the guy I sold it to and bought it back. Im waiting for the shippers to pick it up.

The advertisement is of a air cooled. Mines a waterpumper.

thank you for posting the pic of the Converta-Van

I have a 1991 tintop with those screw on mosquito screens on both sides... I never seen any reference to it.. probably the previous owner of my van picked it up on a 1984 van and install on it... Now I know it's not a hack job but they are add-on accessories way back then...

The floorplan in that flier says "king size bed."

I'm curious to see some pics of how the bed works once you get the van back!

as owners of an 1980 ASI Riviera full camper..
it's neat to see an actual "Converta van" and in BLUE.. wow..

mine did have the rear facing seat and table post in the middle of the floor.
was very impracticable with the full camper. I sold the rear facing seat to another van fello and installed a pass swivel.
I also replaced the inefficient (in use of storage) ASI rear seat/bed for a Westy seat/bed cabinet.

the table post is standard RV fare and you can buy them on fleabay anytime..

Thanks for the link. I too had a 1980 Riviera. It was my driver when I first joined the samba. We talked about it several years back. Then I found this one locally and sold the poptop, as it was damaged. Ive found and seen several ASI Riviera Pop Top campers. I'd really love to see the other ASI versions.

Back in 06-07ish I had an ASI pop top with the same interior as the blue one in the pics. Loved that interior configuration but the plastic top was a POS.

Well, I gotta say that's pretty cool to get your Van back - very cool in fact. I have dreams about cars I sold being back in my garage and its very emotional for me at times.

A couple comments. The ad for the converta van shows the rear seat not being full width, with outboard storage on each side. However the pictures of your re-found blue van indicate this rear seat is full width.

The "king bed" comment is laughable of course. Even the full width bed in my Vanagon is barely a Queen. On the other hand that was a long time ago and perhaps the king size bed was not fully considered an official standardized size.

Again - congratulations on getting your vehicle back!

Doug

Mine has the full width bed. Its super roomy from what I remember. I drove this thing all thru College. Right after graduation I bought a new Jetta GLI(2006) I got the tuner bug and wanted to put all the go fast mods on it. My girlfriend at the time wasn't impressed with the money I was spending on the car. So I sold the Vanagon to justify my spending. Haha. Huge mistake. I missed the bus right away. Guy wouldnt sell it back to me. Then one day he moved and I didnt have his contact number. I tracked him down thru the samba. Once I had a name I had to facebook creep lol. Found him in Texas. He had the brakes apart one day and never got back to it. Its been in his garage for 6 years. Still has my tag on it and the titles still in my name. So in theory, it never left my ownership. Now im waiting for the shippers to pick it up. Im going stir crazy, waiting to be reunited with my ol' baby. Very Happy

Full length bed. Although the storage on the sides would be nice. Ill post some pics up when its back home and all detailed and such. Im having trouble sleeping at night from all the excitement. I owned some really cool cars and have some neat stuff now, but damn how i missed this thing lol. Its the only one ive ever seen with out the poptop. Its like the ASI version of the weekender.
It looks like you have some interesting cars in your signature. Audi 90? I have a really clean 1986 Audi Coupe GT. Im a big Porsche fan as well.

You spotted that quick LOL. I was a fan of your screen name long before it was your screen name! Haha.
Cheers,

Well ive got the bus back in my possesion and have got it all cleaned up and had to fix a handful of things from sitting so long. If im reading the serial number correctly, this is #2 of “converta vans” built by ASI. Id still very much like to know if theres another one. Could this be the only one? I know theres several Riviera’s out there. I’ve owned a couple of them. Does anyone else have hardtop set-up like this?

I never got the original table when I bought the van. I made the NewCastle one from a bar sign I had. It was legit!

There's an A.S.I. poptop conversion for sale in Denver. https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/1980-vw-vanagon-campmobile/6619563993.html

I looked at it in April when he had it advertised for $12k, walked away without a test drive, started hard but did start and he had warmed it up before I got there. Took a lot of cranking to start. Some rear window rust.

He must have done some work on it since then, it did look pretty clean inside. Engine bay looked dusty but a brief look I didn't see indications of oil leaks.

Looks like it has LP tanks on both sides and a builtin furnace, that's a nice feature. I liked the straightup poptop vs the wedge type. I found this A.S.I. brochure - http://wetwesties2.tripod.com/1980-1981_asi_brochure.html

I think I just bought one. Only one rear facing seat, and the table doesn’t use a floor insert. The seats look like the catalog. Vanagon Manufacture date of 02/80. Where was your ASI dataplate? PO screwed the slider shut. Rusty donor; 2.0, 4sp, and interior will be transplanted to my 1980 roller.
