Hello Guys
i am restoring my 1964 bus and I have two questions.
1) The closingmechanism of the tank filler lid that goes into the
Metal of the bus (this small Slot). This small metal in bent round.
My question is, is it correct, that it’s bend round, or should it be flat?
2) it’s about the 4 rubber bumpers for the cargodoors that are mounted on the sidepanel, both cargodoors and the passengerfrontdoor, to open the doors to prevent bumping the doors against the paint. The bumpers for the sidepanel And the both on the cargodoors are screwed in, in a small 5mm nut, that is spotwelded inside. But the bumper on the passengerfrontdoor was only attached with a loose 5mm nut, that was NOT spot welded inside the passengerfrontdoor. My bus was 100% original paint and unrestored, so I guess it’s original this way, but who knows if this passengerfrontdoor -rubber bumper -nut should be also welded in, or correct like it is? Would be happy to hear!
Thanks Christian

Images are not showing up. You should to load them onto thesamba.com web site.
Parts manual shows four nuts used for the rubber buffers. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

On my '64 Kombi the fuel/gas door latch catch "thingy" is rounded like yours is also. My bus is an original survivor (at least the shell is ) as well so I am pretty sure that is how it is supposed to be. Regarding the door bumpers I can't help much as the original doors are not on my bus so I cannot verify if it should be a loose nut or welded. Hope that helps a bit. |

Got out to the MAR62 SO-34 that is under construction to check.
1. Bent
2. Cargo doors have spot welded in square nuts. Front door and far rear buffer have hex nuts put in by hand. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Hey
regarding the latch...
now a german guy contacted me recently and told that
he thinks its just bent over the years, and not bent from the
factory.
Does anybody know it for sure finally?
Christian

Would ask how would the striker area get bent?
If the idea is that the latch tab is forced against the striker making it bent, then the paint should have been torn off in that area.
Also the bend seems way too perfect. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

If you look at the first photo you will notice the bend is not exact top and bottom. Mine is the same. That metal would bend easily with a curved plate rotating against it.
If it is the latch it should show on the paint if someone has one that is OG...
There does not seam to be any reason for that metal other than to keep the door from setting to far in so doubt it is a factory bend. _________________ My 64 Kombi restoration

That piece of metal is there to help reinforce the side panel of the Bus from all the pulling and pushing from anyone opening/closing that lid.
What keeps the door from setting too far inward is the rubber buffers just inside the lid.
Any scraping is going to show thru paint over it, unless someone took all the time to sand out the blemish. Which is not likely except for the most anal restoration. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Once up on a time there used to be gas station attendants that would open the gas door and pump in the gas, shove the door past the rubber bumpers (or the bumpers had rotted or fallen off) with the church key. Then, using the extra leverage of the church key handle and cam leverage action of the catch arm, easily bend the tab. |

Problem is that it is not going to stretch the metal there that easily and especially evenly. Worked in the metal working industry for several decades... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

There must be a couple different styles.
Here is an NOS panel.
Here is a '65 that I never let the attendant open or close.
Here is the NOS catch.
There is even a taper on the inner part for the latch lever to slide down which it cannot slide if the inner part is bent.
There must be at least two styles. |
