what's y'alls opinions on micro stubs vs. vw carriers ? I'm planing on building my own set of 3x3's and understand the benefits of the micros but if remember right seems like I read of ppl complaining they broke easily or that they were expensive, but seems to me if your building a set and have to buy the carriers, bearings etc etc.. that micros may not be much more in the long run? also, has anyone used a hub assembly from production vehicles with good success? |

The micro stubs that race and offroad high performance places sell ARE stock parts. Common ones are Chevy S-10 4x4, but many other modern 4 wheel drive and even 2 wheel drive vehicles use similar hubs. The front hubs on my 2K Durango 2WD are VERY similar except they don't have drive splines or CV flanges. _________________ Richard

I looked into production hub assemblies for a little bit and , like the s-10 , all the ones I looked at had the cv cup made on the stub so youd still have to do some fab work to use a vw or 930 cv |

Richard answer your question very well. There was no need for anyone else to really make a comment.
I use to prepped a Unlimited Baja Bug that use them for off racing. They hold up very well.
They were the Chevy S-10 Hubs and use a approx 5/8in thick aluminum adapter plate going from the 5 on 5-3/4" on the hub to a the 5 on 205mm pattern.
The adapter plate are very strong.
You just have to remember on regular maintenance that you have 5 more lug nuts to check on each wheel.
If I were to do it my own vehicle, I would use something from KarTek, McKenize's, or JaMar.
Empi sells them, but I don't anyone that is using them. _________________ Joseph

That a standard type I replacement one in your picture Brian, the micro stubs are completely different.
The micro stub hubs are kind of what you find in front wheel drive cars. It uses a 3 bolt pattern to bolt on the trailing arms.
Outer carrier, bearings and flange are all pressed together. The micro stub slips into the splines and uses a big nut like the rear axle nut to hold it all together. The micro stub has a flange that CV bolt to. One I seen use either a 930 or 934 CV joint.
One good thing about them is it allows for longer axles so you can get more travel with your suspension. _________________ Joseph

You're right Richard. The micro stub shafts you get from an auto parts store or a wrecking yard will have flanges that match the factory CV joints for that brand and model of vehicle. To get stub shafts ready for 930 CVs it would be most economical to buy a micro stub kit with hubs, 930 CV flanged stubs, 5 x 4.75 to 5 x 205 wheel mount plates, caliper brackets, calipers, etc. Latest Rage or EMPI or Jamar or Saco or ProAm or whatever brand kit. You can buy stub axles themselves for about $120 each. But you still need all the other stuff to go with it.
What I was talking about in my previous post above was the hub assembly itself that's the stock part, even though I used the term "stub". So I apologize if I confused you or any one else. _________________ Richard
