Hi folks,
I'm on the road to Mexico and had some issue that were resolved in Port Angeles at the start of my trip. The bus then drove great from Port Angeles to Roseburg OR. This morning I couldn't get it to start. I can smell gas, the engine is turning over albeit kind of slowly, but it just won't kick in.
Can someone recommend a good shop in the area to have it towed to? I spent the day letting it sit thinking I had flooded it but it's still not turning over. Thanks in advance. _________________ ============================

So it was turning over and now it's not?
Or it is still turning over but not catching?
Your factory dual carbs don't just mysteriously stop working… The smell of gas means fuel is getting out the tailpipe. This is more likely to be an ignition issue, like collapsed point gap or disconnected wire somewhere.
Have you done a thorough check of the engine compartment for loose vacuum hoses and disconnected components? (Your vacuum hoses were all cracking at the ends last time I rode in your bus circa early 2017… )
Good luck, and consider hitting up Tram. He's in Eugene.

Looked through all of that. It's odd as it stopped and started numerous times yesterday but this morning it just didn't have the guts to turn over. I wish I could explain it better but not being a mechanic doesn't help. _________________ ============================

Thanks for all the useful info. I may get a tow around the corner from my hotel to AutoTech Import. Problem is they're only open for half a day on Friday so fingers crossed it's a quick fix. If not then all this info will def come in handy. _________________ ============================

I think Tram is about 70 miles north of you in Springfield. He would be a good person to catch if you can get there. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Tram's in Springfield, yes. Also hasn't logged in since last Friday.
Ping Brian Fye aka vwfye, he's in Roseburg and is Very Good People, mostly in the Type 3 (Notchback/Squareback/Fastback) part of the VW world though he is who I bought my Westy from way back in the day. If he's unable to help he at least has more contacts in that part of the state than I do.

Crimp off your fuel line at the pump and then crank it with the pedal to the metal. She may fire up after 15 seconds or so. If it doesn't start let the starter cool for a minute and then repeat. |

Smell of gas and slow to crank. Might be flooded cylinders. Pull the spark plugs and try cranking. A leaky carburetor needle valve would cause this over night _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

And pull the dipstick to see if there is gas in the oil. _________________

Thanks to everyone for the assistance and suggestions. I was almost going to head over to Autotech, a shop that deals in imports but mostly newer ones, when I got a response from consvws. D/A/N suggested calling him so I did and they got back to me before the tow truck arrived. Big bonus because the shop I was going to closed at noon for the weekend and I might have been stuck in Roseburg until Monday. (cute town by the way)
Anyway, Conrad and the old man got to looking at the bus and within about 15 minutes found that the valves needed major adjustments. Once that was done the bus turned over. They sorted out a few other loose ends and I was on my way before noon. Highly recommend these guys if you're ever in the area.

If you have valves that are tightening up on you at a high rate then you have something wrong that you need to fix before you blow your engine up. You could have a seat or two that are loose and ready to drop or you could have head bolts or rocker arm bolts that are pulling. I would suggest spending some time with Aeromech or someone else before crossing the border. |

When you get towards the San Francisco area and are still troubled by anything, hit me up. I may be available, depending on my work. |

Thanks. I usually head that way but I'm just outside of Sacramento this morning and rolling down the I5 so I don't think I'll be passing through SF. _________________ ============================

I-5 is pretty boring, but that's cool. 101 is just about as fast and a lot prettier.
If you have any troubles today, reach out. I am way over by Fresno, and am going to drive up to the Bay Area this afternoon via Fresno/Los Banos/Tracy. |

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to try to hook up with somebody today to take a look at it. _________________ ============================
