I’ve purchased my first beetle this weekend (had a bus for a while) and today I’ve been looking and trying to sort various bits on it. It is a 63 uk ragtop with its original engine. On the right hand side below the oil pump is this switch/sensor but can anyone tell me what it is. I know it isn’t the oil pressure switch so I’m guessing it may be a temperature sender of some sort. It isn’t currently connected but I’d like to identify what it is first and then decide if I should hook it up in future, leave as is or buy a blanking plug and replace at some point. Any advice greatfully received and thanks in advance for your help.

Steve

Looks like an oil temp sensor installed in the oil pump pickup passage, it also looks like a bourdon tube style sender so if the line to the gauge has been cut it's now NFG.
I wonder how far into the passage it protrudes and if it impedes the flow at all?

Thanks for the quick reply. Two other questions as I don’t really want/need it. Can I get a blanking plug from somewhere and also do I then need to replace when I’m undertaking and oil change or will no oil run out from here whilst the engine is turned off?

Cheers

Steve

You will lose most of your oil when you remove it. Take it out and find a plug that matches the threads and screw it in using some sealant like teflon tape.
